Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
The TOWN HALL was built in 1923 in the Neo-Renaissance style to the design of architect P. van der Velden from Geldrop. Around 1950 a single-storey office wing was built to the right at the rear. The building was opened up at the rear in 1983. At that time a large new municipal building arose with main entrance. The original town hall now primarily serves a representative function.
Description.
The two-storey building comprises five bays and has a largely L-shaped plan. The façades are built from machine-made brickwork; the hipped and gabled roofs are covered with slate in riven slate covering.
The recessed right section, like the left section, has two storeys with cross windows with small glazing bars in the fanlights. The window sills are of hardstone, the corner blocks of sandstone. The right section is terminated by a cornice-topped façade. In the roof is a roof dormer with Palladian window. The left section is terminated by a recessed gable. Two narrow mullioned windows are located in this gable. The gable is terminated by a semicircular pediment with a sandstone relief bearing the municipal coat of arms. In the corner between the two sections stands a tower with square base. The first stage consists of a semicircular archway portico with sandstone surround. Relief work of palmettes and mascarons is found within. An oak is carved on the front; on the side above the mascarons "S.P.Q.B" is carved. In the portico is a façade stone inscribed: P. v.d. Velden architect Geldrop. There is also a foundation stone: "1st stone laid 6-8-1923 P.J.C. Aarts burgomaster / S.W. Aarts / F. Veldhoven alderman." The elaborate, varnished wing doors contain two round windows with ornamental grille and a semicircular fanlight. The portico has a coffered ceiling.
The second stage contains a loggia with sandstone parapet and semicircular arches with sandstone surround. The name Bergeijk is placed on the front, the date 1923 on the side.
In the third and upper stage are two narrow mullioned windows on both sides. The tower is crowned by a helmet-shaped roof with opening for a clock. On the ridge is a lantern, bearing a weather vane with the date 1923.
In the left façade are two storeys beneath a cornice-topped façade of three bays. The windows match those in the front façade.
The right façade has a stepped gable with chimney on the corner and behind it a cornice-topped façade section. On the corner there is a window at half width on the ground floor and upper storey.
In the stepped gable is a small window. Further there are two small and one larger window beneath the cornice-topped façade.
The interior beyond the front door contains a draught lobby and a central hall. There is a natural stone floor; the space is divided by columns of Namur stone. The ceilings have coffered divisions. To the left front was the burgomaster's chamber. This has herringbone parquet, a corner fireplace and a heavy beamed ceiling. Other rooms have been altered. To the right at the rear is the door giving access to the large cellar. In the central hall a grand staircase with landings serves the upper floor. The staircase has a wooden balustrade resting on richly worked iron balusters with rolled intermediate profiles. The attic is reached via a narrow wooden service staircase; the archives were originally kept here. Here is the access to the tower chamber in which is a case containing the clock mechanism.
This was supplied by B. Eijsbouts from Asten in 1932.
Valuation.
The town hall is of general importance. It has cultural-historical significance as an example of socio-economic and administrative development, namely the establishment of town halls for small municipalities and as an example of the typological development of the village town hall. It has architectural-historical value because of its style and as an example of the oeuvre of architect Van der Velden. It is also valuable because of the distinctive composition of the plan and the ornamentation. The building is important because of the integrity of its exterior and interior.
