The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

The former MILITARY POLICE BARRACKS was built in 1870 in an artisanal-traditional style and is currently in use as a residential house. The building was constructed using bricks and roof timbers from another building in the immediate vicinity, which was demolished in the previous century.

Description.

The tall single-storey building made of reused brickwork comprises five bays and has a symmetrical layout. It is partly cellared.

The plan is rectangular; the half-hipped roof is covered with red traditional Dutch roof tiles. The roof ridge runs parallel to the street. The façades are built from various types of handmoulded brickwork with a tooth moulding beneath the eaves and straight bond anchors.

The six-light sash windows have hardstone sills and a slightly arched brick course for closure.

In the centre is a panelled door with a divided fanlight. A small window with ornamental grille has been placed in the door.

The door is accessed via several brick steps. A façade stone gives the date 1870.

During a renovation around 1985, large tilt windows were installed at the front in the roof. Four brick chimneys stand on the roof ridge. The side façades have a row of corbels along the eave line. On the attic storey there are two six-light sash windows on both sides.

The rear façade has a door with divided fanlight in the centre and two six-light sash windows to the right. To the left of the door are two smaller square windows and new French doors with rounded upper corners.

The building is screened at the front by a beech hedge.

Valuation.

The former military police barracks is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical value as an example of administrative development in the border region; it is also important as an example of the typological development of the barracks in the nineteenth century. It has architectural-historical significance due to its utilitarian design and the use of older components. It has been preserved intact and as an early example of a military police barracks is extremely rare.
