Inleiding
AANLEG van de Algemene Begraafplaats, in 1935 ontworpen in de stijl van de Delftse School door de gemeentearchitect J. Dekker. Door de vrij strakke geometrisch aanleg vertoont de begraafplaats verwantschap met de Nieuwe Architectonische tuinstijl.
Omschrijving
De begraafplaats is vanaf de openbare weg toegankelijk via twee bruggen die beide uitkomen op een begrind voorplein, dat aan de westzijde wordt afgesloten door het met heesters beplante schuine talud van het begraafgedeelte. Aan waterzijde (oost) bevindt zich een groenstrook met voornamelijk heesters. Naast de bruggen staan monumentale boomgroepen met ondermeer rode treurbeuken. In het midden, tegenover de aula, leidt een uit rode baksteen opgetrokken trap naar een klein rond plein, beplant met coniferen, met aan weerszijden een rechthoekig begrensd, geometrisch padenpatroon met graven. In het verlengde van de trap, aan de andere zijde van een in langsrichting over de begraafplaats lopend grindpad, wordt de middenas beëindigd door een half ellipsvormig pad met enkele monumentale graven. Dit gedeelte wordt op de hoekpunten gemarkeerd door ginko biloba's en rondom staat ook diverse metasequoia's. Een tweede toegang naar de begraafplaats (voor de rouwstoet) gaat linksom via een door lindebomen geflankeerd flauw oplopende pad en komt uit bij voornoemd pad, dat in langsrichting over de begraafplaats loopt. De verschillende segmenten worden van elkaar door heggetjes gescheiden. De aanleg kenmerkt zich door een gevarieerde beplanting met diverse heesters, loofbomen, zoals treurberken en een rijke variëteit aan coniferen als taxus- en ceder-soorten.

The cemetery is accessible from the public road via two bridges which both open onto a gravel forecourt, which is closed off on the west side by the sloping embankment of the burial area planted with shrubs. In the centre, opposite the chapel, a red brick staircase leads to a small circular plaza, planted with conifers, with on either side a rectangular demarcated geometric pattern of paths with graves. In the extension of the stairs, on the other side of a gravel path running lengthwise across the cemetery, the central axis is terminated by a semi-elliptical path with several monumental graves. This section is marked at the corners by ginkgo biloba trees and also contains various metasequoia trees around it.
