Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The standalone WATER TOWER on the Amersfoortse Berg, situated a short distance on the south side of the Utrechtseweg, was built in 1912 on commission of the Gemeente Waterleiding Bedrijf. Because the tower was situated at a relatively high-lying point (44m above NAP) there was no need to design a tall tower. This led to a fairly rare, squat form. The occasion for the construction was dissatisfaction with the water quality which the Utrechtse Waterleiding-Maatschappij had supplied from Soesterberg since 1890. Since the concession to the UWM did not grant exclusive rights, a fairly unique situation arose in which there were two competing water supply companies. The design was provided by Gemeentewerken with municipal architect C.G. Beltman as final responsible party. The tower was built by the firm T. van Hoogevest from Amersfoort. The tower was designed in transitional architecture, in which motifs from Neo-Romanesque predominate, such as the spared fields with rounded arch friezes, alternated by lisenes, and rounded arch windows.
Probably during the restoration in 1944 the detailing in the balustrade was removed. In 1947 the original steel windows were removed and partly replaced by wooden windows and partly bricked over. In the interior, on the ground floor a space was created in which an emergency generator is located. A number of dish antennae have been placed on top of the roof. These alterations fall outside the protection.
Description
The water tower has the form of a cylinder, with a diameter of 12 metres and a height of 17 metres. In the cylinder is a steel reservoir of the Intze I type, resting on a steel structure. Around it a non-load-bearing brick shell has been designed. In the shell the position of the reservoir is expressed by a cornice line between the one-storey-high base which is placed on a low plinth and the shell above it surrounding the reservoir. A cornice carried by corbels, in which small narrow windows are located, and a balustrade crown the whole.
The cylinder can be subdivided into eight similar bays with the exception of the two entrance sections.
Above the door and windows are natural stone lintels, with a large rounded arch above the door and two smaller rounded arches above the windows. Above the entrance on the north side is the inscription 'Gemeente-Waterleiding' in a natural stone relief. In the other bays on the ground floor a double rounded arch window has been made, with a single-light window and glazing bars in the rounded arch fanlight.
Each bay in the upper storey consists of a spared field, bounded by lisenes. The spared field is crowned by a rounded arch frieze. In the middle of the lisenes is a very elongated window enclosed by a rounded arch. The window is divided horizontally by glazing bars. Each spared field has two small four-pane windows with above them separated by ornamental brickwork, two bricked-up rounded arch-shaped windows. The brick balustrade steps in height, with the highest parts situated above the lisenes.
The interior is determined by the support structure of the water reservoir.
Valuation
The water tower is of general importance because of its architectural and cultural-historical value as an example of a water tower with Intze reservoir, executed in transitional architecture in which Neo-Romanesque forms predominate. Of townscape value as a 'landmark', situated at the highest point of the Amersfoortse Berg. Of cultural-historical value because of the function which is connected with the development in the field of water management.
