VILLA, opgebouwd als een compositie van drie samengestelde kubische massa's van verschillende hoogte, breedte en diepte met daaraan één bouwlaag hoge halfronde uitbouwen, aan zowel de oost- als de westgevel. Op deze uitbouwen zijn terrassen gelegen. De hoofdmassa heeft een L-vorm, waarvan de relatief korte voet het meest naar voren gelegen deel is in de zuidgevel. De hoofdmassa heeft drie bouwlagen, waarvan de eerste bouwlaag relatief hoog is. Hier zijn de voornaamste ruimten gepositioneerd, zoals de gecombineerde hal/woonkamer, de brede trap, de eetkamer en de rookkamer. Deze laatste ruimte steekt aan de oostzijde middels een halfrond, één bouwlaag hoog volume uit de hoofdmassa. Hierboven bevindt zich een ommuurd terras. Aan de westzijde van de hoofdmassa bevindt zich een drie bouwlagen hoge kubische uitbouw. De eerste en de tweede bouwlaag hebben samen dezelfde hoogte als de eerste bouwlaag van de hoofdmassa. Oorspronkelijk waren hierin de dienstruimten ondergebracht. Tussen woongebouw en garage was een open doorgang, die na de verbouw is afgesloten. Aan de westzijde bevindt zich een één bouwlaag hoog volume met halfronde hoekoplossing, waarin zich voorheen de garage met stalen garagedeuren bevond. Bij de verbouw zijn de garagedeuren vervangen door hoge vensters. Hierboven bevindt zich een ommuurd terras, dat te bereiken is via trappen aan weerszijden.
In het midden van de voorgevel (noordzijde) bevindt zich een uit drie lage bouwlagen bestaande risaliet, waarin op de begane grond de keuken, en op de daarboven gelegen verdiepingen de diensttrap was ontworpen. Links naast deze risaliet bevindt zich de hoofdentree, die door een lage overstek en vensters met glas-in-lood is geaccentueerd. Rechts in de oksel van de risaliet is een kwartrond bouwvolume van drie verdiepingen aangebracht. Dit bouwvolume bezit een reliëfrijk metselwerk, bestaande uit verticaal geplaatste stenen, dat door een strokenvenster wordt afgesloten. Tegen de rechter voorzijde van de risaliet is een halfronde serre met roedenverdeling geplaatst.
Schoorstenen bevinden zich in de hoofdmassa, op het raakvlak ter linkerzijde van de risaliet aan de noordzijde en het raakvlak ter rechterzijde van de risaliet aan de zuidzijde.
De gevels worden aan de buitenzijde door variatie in metselverbanden, materiaalgebruik en venstervormen geaccentueerd. Daardoor komt ook het verschil tussen de voorname hoofdmassa en de 'dienst'-risalieten goed tot uitdrukking, omdat zo het verschil in hoogte van de eerste bouwlaag duidelijk wordt. Deze eerste bouwlaag is met gele baksteen in Noors verband gemetseld. In de hoofdmassa wordt dit echter doorbroken. Aan de noordgevel door een strook verticaal metselwerk, met daartussen een strokenvenster, dat de rookkamer rondom verlicht, terwijl aan de gevels aan de oost- en zuidzijde een stook met reliëfrijk blokvormig metselwerk is aangebracht. De tweede bouwlaag wordt rondom door een smalle strook identiek blokvormig reliëfrijk metselwerk geaccentueerd. Deze strook is in de hoofdmassa breder en tevens hoger gelegen dan in de risalieten. In de strook van de hoofdmassa zijn éénlichts vensters geplaatst, in de strook in de risalieten tweelichts vensters. Het meest opmerkelijk is de bedekking van de derde bouwlaag: verticaal aangebrachte rood geglazuurde leipannen. In deze derde bouwlaag zijn op regelmatige afstand van elkaar kleine tweelichts vensters aangebracht.
Het interieur van het woonhuis Dr J.P. Heyelaan 2 is nog grotendeels intact. Bijzondere ruimten, zowel wat indeling als materiaalgebruik betreft, zijn de geheel met natuursteen beklede entree, de gecombineerde hal/woonkamer/trap en de halfronde en verdiept gelegen rookkamer. Details als in het plafond weggewerkte lampen, blokvormige deuren (die zijn verwijderd uit nummer 2, maar opnieuw gebruikt als entree van nummer 4), strak afgewerkte plafonds en van verschillende houtsoorten vervaardigd meubilair.
Waardering
Villa 'De Wachter' is van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische waarde als goed voorbeeld van een villa, gebouwd in de stijl van de Amsterdamse School met invloeden van het Zakelijk Expressionisme. Binnen de ontwikkeling van de villa neemt dit pand door de vernieuwende elementen (uitvoering van de kap) een belangrijke plaats in. De villa is binnen het oeuvre van de internationaal als belangrijk erkende architect H.Th. Wijdeveld van betekenis. De villa bezit, samen met de tot het complex behorende tennishuisje en pergola, ensemblewaarde als onderdeel van de villawijk.

VILLA, constructed as a composition of three combined cubic masses of different heights, widths and depths with one-storey high semicircular extensions on both the east and west facades. Terraces are situated on these extensions. The main mass has an L-shape, of which the relatively short foot is the most forward-projecting part on the south facade. The main mass has three storeys, of which the first storey is relatively high. Here the principal rooms are positioned, such as the combined hall/living room, the wide staircase, the dining room and the smoking room. The latter room projects on the east side by means of a semicircular, one-storey high volume from the main mass. Above it is a walled terrace. On the west side of the main mass is a three-storey high cubic extension. The first and second storeys together have the same height as the first storey of the main mass. Originally the service rooms were housed here. Between the residential building and garage was an open passage, which was closed after the renovation. On the west side is a one-storey high volume with a semicircular corner solution, which formerly housed the garage with steel garage doors. During the renovation, the garage doors were replaced by tall windows. Above this is a walled terrace, which can be reached via staircases on both sides.
In the centre of the front facade (north side) is a risalit consisting of three low storeys, in which the kitchen is designed on the ground floor, and on the storeys above it the service staircase was designed. To the left of this risalit is the main entrance, which is accentuated by a low overhang and windows with leaded glass. To the right in the corner of the risalit is a quarter-round building volume of three storeys. This building volume has richly textured brickwork, consisting of vertically placed stones, which is terminated by a strip window. Against the right front of the risalit is a semicircular conservatory with glazing bars.
Chimneys are situated in the main mass, at the junction on the left side of the risalit on the north side and the junction on the right side of the risalit on the south side.
The facades are accentuated on the outside by variation in bond patterns, material use and window forms. This also clearly expresses the difference between the principal main mass and the 'service' risalits, as it makes clear the difference in height of the first storey. This first storey is laid with yellow brick in Norwegian bond. In the main mass, however, this is interrupted. On the north facade by a strip of vertical brickwork, with between it a strip window, which illuminates the smoking room all around, while on the facades on the east and south sides a strip with richly textured block-shaped brickwork is applied. The second storey is accentuated all around by a narrow strip of identical block-shaped textured brickwork. This strip is wider in the main mass and also positioned higher than in the risalits. In the strip of the main mass are single-light windows, in the strip in the risalits two-light windows. Most remarkable is the covering of the third storey: vertically applied red glazed slate tiles. In this third storey, small two-light windows are arranged at regular intervals from each other.
The interior of the residential house Dr J.P. Heyelaan 2 is still largely intact. Exceptional rooms, both in terms of layout and material use, are the entrance entirely clad with natural stone, the combined hall/living room/staircase and the semicircular and sunken smoking room. Details such as lamps built into the ceiling, block-shaped doors (which were removed from number 2 but reused as the entrance of number 4), neatly finished ceilings and furniture made from different types of wood.
Valuation
Villa 'De Wachter' is of general interest because of its architectural historical value as a good example of a villa built in the style of the Amsterdam School with influences from Business Expressionism.
