Inleiding

Symons gebouwd. De opdrachtgever was A. Sulzer.

Introduction

VILLA "Arioso" is situated on an extensive plot of land, at short distance from the public road. The entrance is marked by gate piers bearing the name "Villa Arios". The building is part of the villa district.

The building was constructed in 1937 to the design of architect H.F. Symons, who came from Laren. The client was A. Sulzer. The initial design of the villa was considerably modified before construction. The most significant change concerned the garage, which unlike the executed design was positioned separately from the building. The Sachlichkeit Expressionism in which the villa is designed is expressed in the expressive composition of horizontal and vertical cubic forms with flat roofs and in the use of materials such as steel and glass. The large horizontal overhangs and canopies at various heights evoke memories of the architecture of F.L. Wright and W.M. Dudok.

Recent internal alterations have eliminated the original separation of the service spaces, which were located to the northwest. However, the original design has scarcely been compromised by this. The yellow brick chimney on the east side is of later date, which is why the chimney falls outside the national monument protection.

Description

The floor plan of the villa is irregular, although an L-shape can be identified with at its pivot point a tall tower volume of three storeys. The long side of the L-shape is oriented east-west and comprises two storeys, stepping slightly in height. On the northeast side is the garage, consisting of one storey and connected to the villa by means of a wall. The villa has a red brick plinth and the walls above consist of whitewashed brick. The horizontal character is reinforced by the pointing of the stretcher joints and the deepening of the bed joints. The repeated use of vertical glazing bars in the steel windows of varying size forms an important element in the design. The floors of the villa and parts of the overhangs are executed in reinforced concrete. Round forms in the exterior, such as in windows, brick piers, balconies, and in the interior, such as in wall terminations and stair railings, provide variation to the rectangular forms.

The garage is situated in front on the left side of the facade, connected to the villa by a low wall. The garage has a rectangular floor plan and a flat roof, with a comparable overhang to the villa.

In the relatively closed front facade (north side) facing the road, the entrance area is located within a projecting volume, marked by a large canopy. Brick piers and a low stair form the entrance to the front door. To the left of this a double projecting tower volume is placed, where, in the most forward-projecting section, the stair is housed, which receives daylight via a round window on the first floor and rectangular windows with vertical glazing bars at the top. To the left of this, in the more recessed volume, on the first floor a continuous window of the study room is visible, whereby the corner column is left free. To the right of the entrance, in the main mass, three narrow vertical window casings are positioned at equal distance from each other, also provided with vertical glazing bars. Behind this facade lie, on both ground floor and first floor, the circulation spaces, such as corridors. A brick pier, which runs from the front door to in front of the service space, separates off a small area where provisions can be temporarily stored. In the volume where the service spaces were located round windows are found. The east facade is dominated by the three-storey high tower volume. On the left side the wall steps back to one storey. To the right of the tower volume is a two-storey high building mass. Rectangular steel windows are distributed asymmetrically across the facade. A large overhanging balcony at the level of the first floor dominates the facade. This balcony runs along the entire south facade and thus connects various bedrooms. A chimney built of yellow brick was added later and falls outside the protection.

The relatively glass-rich south facade has a terrace and balconies at varying levels. Eye-catching elements are the column-free corners in the ground-floor window in the projection on the right, the large steel sliding door in the centre, the rounding in the balcony on the first floor, the walled-in terrace in front of the 'tower room' on the second floor and the expressively double overhanging roof section above the 'tower room'.

The west facade shows cubic forms that step in position and size, covered by flat overhanging roofs. At the front the cubic form in which the service spaces were housed. On the first floor is a large rectangular window. Behind the service spaces rises the higher cubic form of the main mass, however also containing two storeys here. On the ground floor a large window is visible behind which the kitchen is located. The window has been recently altered.

The interior is largely still identical to the design by H.F. Symons. Simplicity and functionality form important characteristics here. Remarkable details consist of the light sources recessed into the ceiling and rounded wall terminations and windows. The wall of steel and glass between the living and dining room can be completely recessed into the floor by means of counterweights.

Valuation

The villa is of general interest because of its architectural historical value as an intact and good example of villa architecture in Sachlichkeit Expressionist style with influences from F.L. Wright and W.M. Dudok. Within the oeuvre of architect H.F. Symons this villa occupies a prominent place.
