Inleiding

Description
Introduction
WAREHOUSE, situated parallel to the eastern quay of the Grote Koppel, is located on the north side of Amersfoort at the river Eem and recalls the port and trading function of the Grote and Kleine Koppel. The building was designed in 1904 on commission of the firm J. Van Vollenhoven by H. Kroes and housed the 'Colonial Goods Department', as appears from the building drawing, on which this text is stated on a tiling panel designed in Jugendstil style above the central projection. The warehouse is designed in the style of early twentieth-century rationalism. The front facade, building mass and the internal structure of the warehouse are of subordinate importance due to the alterations.
The building is flanked by late eighteenth-century structures.
Description
The warehouse, situated on a trapezoidal floor plan, has three storeys and a very gently sloping lean-to roof. The load-bearing structure consists mainly of a steel skeleton of H-beams. In the middle of the front there is an office. A large number of windows are incorporated in the front facade.
The virtually symmetrical and rectangular front facade (south-west side) is bordered on both sides by brick pilasters, on which stylised natural stone capitals formerly stood. The three storeys of the front facade are divided into three by a slightly higher but narrower central projection. Stylised natural stone capitals were also located on the corners of the central projection. The left section can be divided into three bays, whereby the centre bay occupies approximately half of the entire width. In this centre bay are housed the wooden warehouse doors, which are flanked on each storey by windows. On the first storey, a large segmental arch spans the wide and high warehouse doors and the windows. This arch is supported by two wall buttresses, with natural stone blocks at the meeting points between buttress and arch. On the second and third storeys, a smaller segmental arch spans only the narrower and lower warehouse doors here. Where the doors on the second storey extend up to the arch, on the third storey there are rectangular doors, above which an iron H-beam with a brick arch. A second iron H-beam, perpendicular to and located in the middle of the first-mentioned H-beam, serves as a crane. The facade is crowned by a moulded cornice of brick with a natural stone top.
The bay to the right is virtually identical to the left bay. In place of the warehouse doors on the first storey there are two house doors, with a square single-light window with fanlight with glazing bars between them. In the doors a window with glazing bars and fanlights also with glazing bars.
In the central projection there are only windows. On the first storey a two-light window with fanlight with glazing bars, flanked by single-light windows with cross-form glazing bars, spanned by one segmental arch, which is supported by two wall buttresses. An identical arrangement of windows is found on the second storey, whereby the arch is more depressed and the glazing bars in the fanlights are simpler. On the third storey the same arrangement is found, but without an arch: the windows are spanned by a natural stone lintel. Above the windows two-part fanlights. In the central projection above the natural stone lintel is a broad, grey field crowned by a depressed brick segmental arch, on which "d'Eersteling" is still faintly visible. The central projection is crowned by a cornice of orange-coloured brick and a natural stone top. Wrought iron wall anchors with Jugendstil detailing.
Valuation
The warehouse is of general importance as an authentic and typical example of a warehouse executed in rationalist architectural style, which occupies an important place in the oeuvre of architect H. Kroes. The building is also of ensemble value in relation to the surrounding (ware)houses on the Grote and Kleine Koppel.
