Omschrijving

Waardering

Description

The residential block F, Borgesiuslaan 33-41, was added to the MIDDLE-CLASS HOUSING complex by architect A.H. van Wamelen in 1922. The block is situated parallel to the Borgesiuslaan, with the roof—in contrast to the other parts of the complex—covered not with thatch but with tiles. The building block possesses a horizontal massing on an elongated rectangular floor plan, separated from the public road by shallow front gardens. The main mass parallel to the road, which has only low recessed extensions at the ends, is two storeys high, with a hipped roof covered in red Dutch tiles as its finishing. On the ridge, at regular intervals on the dividing lines between the dwellings, rectangular chimneys are positioned. The narrow west and east sides of the hipped roof, which extend down to the first storey, are interrupted by strip windows.

The form of the hipped roof also determines the building style of the block, which has been influenced by the expressive forms and masonry bonds of the Amsterdam School, the Cottage style originating from England, and the Gooise country house style.

The front facade (south side), symmetrical in main form but asymmetrical in details, can be subdivided into three middle dwellings, all with entrances at the front, and one dwelling at the far left and one at the far right, which have entrances in the side facade. The front entrances are not entirely in the centre of the dwelling. The round-arched wooden door is flanked on one side by a coupled window with shutters and on the other side by a single window with one shutter. Symmetrically distributed are the four-part strip windows in the second storey, of which each of the three dwellings has two, separated from each other by a horizontal wooden lining. The two outer dwellings deviate from this. At the left dwelling, one strip window is installed, with wooden lining to its left that curves halfway down to the first storey. Beneath it, in the first storey, a small coupled window is installed without shutters. To the right of this, below the strip window, is a larger coupled window with shutters. At the far left, the hipped roof extending down to the first storey is visible recessed. This spans a porch, supported by a wooden column. The triangular side wall above the porch is finished with wooden lining. At the right dwelling, the mentioned facade layout is mirrored from the left dwelling.

The symmetrical rear facade can be subdivided into the middle dwelling, which is characterised by balconies, the two flanking dwellings with strip windows in the second storey, and the two outer dwellings with a massive asymmetrical chimney and next to it the lower extensions, which partly project in relation to the main mass.

The main mass of the asymmetrical left side facade consists of two storeys with a hipped roof. A broad roof dormer with strip window is inserted in the hipped roof. The roof section transitions on the left side into the low roof over the kitchen extension projecting in relation to the main mass, which ends at the built-up chimney. Below the overhang is the entrance of Borgesiuslaan 41. To the right of the entrance is a window. The overhang is also supported by a wooden column, which is placed on a brick wall. In the facade of the kitchen extension is a small window. The two storeys of the main mass are entirely provided with horizontal boarding. In the second storey is a strip window.

The right side facade is mirror-identical to the left side facade, with the exception of the roof section: here the broad roof dormer is absent.

Valuation

The residential block F Borgesiuslaan 33-41 is of general interest owing to its great architectural-historical value as a well-preserved example of a complex of middle-class housing executed in the style of the Amsterdam School. The complex possesses urban planning significance and has ensemble value as part of the Frisia complex.
