Inleiding

Introduction

An OFFICE BUILDING built in 1897 by Gouda architect H.J. Nederhorst, originally intended as a bank building for a stockbroker (Knox and Dortland). In the early 20th century Nederhorst acquired the property for his architectural practice. Since then various internal alterations have taken place. During the last conversion to a shop in 1992, a noteworthy stucco ceiling in Neo-Baroque style came to light on the upper floor, depicting the four seasons, which has been carefully restored. The application of Neo-Dutch Renaissance style is characteristic of the extensive oeuvre of architect Nederhorst, with this building standing out for its very rich ornamentation including the pilasters and plasterwork in the arch fields above the storey windows.

The building is located within the protected townscape of Gouda and forms part of the continuous facade wall of the Turfmarkt.

N.B. The whitewashed two-storey extension on the rear falls outside national monument protection.

Description

The building with a rectangular floor plan tapering slightly towards the rear, consists of two storeys with an attic and is covered by a hipped roof with wooden corner rafters featuring carved work, running around three sides. The front roof slope is covered with slates in Maas bond, while the sides are fitted with double-bond crossing roof tiles.

The asymmetrically arranged front facade is a cornice-topped facade interrupted by a built-up roof dormer. Above a plinth of large dressed hardstone rustic blocks the building is constructed of grey brick (finely jointed). White painted plasterwork is used for decorative elements such as ornamental bands and blocks and arch spandrels.

On the ground floor decorated with ornamental bands, in the second bay from the left, there is a panelled door with carved work, two side lights and a fanlight. This bay is emphasized by the aforementioned roof dormer, which extends beyond the gutter line. To the left of the entrance there is one cross window and to the right a large three-part window.

The ground floor and upper storey are separated by a double ornamental moulding with triglyph work and ornamental brickwork in between. The strikingly richly decorated upper storey is characterized by fantasy capitals in Mannerist style at the location of the window pilasters, which - resting on consoles with lion heads - consist of herms acting as atlantes half-columns with Ionic capitals. The four windows with sash frames (of which the left one is wider than the others) are closed by round arch shaped relieving arches with decorative blocks. The arch spandrels are provided with grey-coloured stucco work with putti in high relief, which are an allegorical reference to trade. The keystones of the round arches are executed as decorative consoles, which carry an inverted cornice of the main entablature, which is fitted with ornamental brickwork with diamond point motif and triglyphs in line with the pilasters and consoles. A profiled wooden gutter moulding closes off the facade.

The roof dormer executed with ornamental bands is set within decoratively executed pilasters that carry an entablature, below which a course with plastered abutting and closing stones - a sash window is placed. The roof dormer is covered by a bell-shaped roof covered with zinc shingles, with an overhanging tent-shaped crown on top. On either side of the steep roof slope there is a small roof dormer with a slender tapering tower-like zinc spire.

INTERIOR In the interior on the upper storey at the front, presumably at the location of the original directors' room, there is a rectangular stucco ceiling with papier-mâché components in the original colour scheme. It consists of a geometric pattern with profile and egg-and-dart mouldings and painted fields with floral motifs. The fields in the four corners relate to the theme of the four seasons. The central quatrefoil motif painted with flowers and birds has in the centre a heavy high relief decoration.

Valuation

Turfmarkt 12 is of general importance for its architectural and cultural-historical value as a good example of an office building from the end of the 19th century with a front facade representative for its period in a rich Neo-Dutch Renaissance style. From an architectural-historical perspective it is important as a representative example from the oeuvre of Gouda architect H.J. Nederhorst.

The building components are intact in main form, material use and detail, in particular the abundantly decorated front facade and in the interior the characteristic stucco ceiling with paintings on the upper storey.

From a town-planning perspective the building is important because of its ensemble value as a characteristic component of a closed facade wall along a canal within the protected townscape.
