Inleiding

Introduction

A lock complex in a dam laid out in 1854 in the Hollandsche IJssel. The hydraulic engineering work forms part of a plan for improvement, for which the IJssel above Gouda had to be deepened, closed off and canalised.

This concerns a lock complex situated in the Hollandsche IJssel at the southern edge of Gouda (between Gouda and Haastrecht), which consists of a CHAMBER LOCK annex TIDAL LOCK and SLUICE LOCK. The complex divides the Hollandsche IJssel into the canalised Hollandsche IJssel (above Gouda) and the open Hollandsche IJssel below Gouda. Construction of the lock complex - as part of the canalisation of the Hollandsche IJssel - began in 1856. The complex, designed by Chief Engineers of the Water Authority, was opened for shipping traffic in 1860. In the years 1919-1920 the water barrier was raised in its entirety to the current level. The lock complex was renovated in 1984.

The chamber lock is equipped in particular with two fan gates, whereby it is known by the name 'Fan Lock'. A fan lock is a type of chamber lock first applied in 1808, the lock gates of which can be closed towards both sides, also in flowing water, even against the current. Due to the presence of fan gates the lock can function, besides as a chamber lock, also as a drainage, inundation and tidal lock. The lock chamber contains, besides the fan gates, a set of outer ebb gates (renewed in 1954), a set of inner ebb gates (renewed in 1956), a set of inner flood gates (renewed in 1960) and a set of outer flood gates, which were replaced in 1959. The bridge over the fan lock, which can be operated by manpower, is a SWING BRIDGE with rigging, related to a crane bridge, the replacement of the originally spanning crane bridge over the lock chamber.

Description

The Fan Lock has a chamber with 42 metre long, masoned lock walls, which have variable height and are provided with ashlar corner blocks, concrete cap stones and stairs, reaching stones and -irons, and tunnel-vaulted sewers closable by gates for the casings of the fan chambers and the outer face. In the largely concrete lock heads of the straight chamber are located seatings for the stop planks. The stop planks can be lowered into the seatings by means of winches standing on the lock head. The fan gates, placed opposite each other in both lock walls, are two-part and are located in quarter-circle-shaped casings. The shorter, front gates form together in closed position a point gate. In open position the gates stand in the casing, parallel to the chamber walls. The longer rear gates, which are called the fans, close against the erect walls of the casings when the lock is closed by the point gate.

In both heads of the lock are situated ebb and flood gates. The lower ebb gates are point gates, as are the higher flood gates, but are differently oriented. The flood gates are provided with iron grillwork, which serve to provide support when crossing the lock. The actual lock bridge, which spans the chamber at the highest, western point of the dam, is a narrow iron footbridge with wooden bridge deck. It concerns a seldom occurring type of swing bridge with rigging. The bridge rotates around a vertical axis attached to the southern quay wall and has a supporting strut connected to this axis. On the lock quays stand, besides post-war ones, a number of nineteenth-century cast-iron boxes with gear mechanisms for the operation of the lock gates. The closures of the sewers can be manually operated by means of the horizontal gear wheels on either side of the lock heads. The accesses to the lock are provided with braking structures.

Valuation

The Fan Lock is of general interest on account of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value.

The fan lock has cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of a typological development in lock construction in the Netherlands.

The fan lock has architectural-historical value on account of the importance of such a lock type for the history of building technique.

The lock is furthermore of importance on account of its recognisability and has ensemble value as an essential component of a large-scale hydraulic engineering structure. The lock is of importance both for shipping and for the water management of Gouda and its surroundings.

The lock is also of importance on account of its high degree of integrity.

The fan lock furthermore has rarity value as one of the few locks of this type that have been built in the Netherlands.
