Inleiding

Introduction

Built on the western side of the Kerkstraat, in the centre of Haps, the Roman Catholic CHURCH BUILDING of St Nicholas dates from 1899 and was designed by C. Franssen. It is a non-orientated Neo-Gothic cruciform basilica with a southern tower.

Description

The cruciform basilica has a nave of four bays and a transept with tripartite closed arms, followed by one choir bay and an apse, consisting of a transition bay and a tripartite closure. The choir has an ambulatory. The southern tower has four storeys and an octagonal spire with roof dormers and flanking spirelets. Against the south-eastern corner of the nave stands a five-sided baptistery.

The church has gabled roofs with shingled slate in Maas covering.

The crossing is crowned by an octagonal roof turret with needle spire. Both the choir, roof turret and flanking spirelets are provided with iron cresting with wrought-iron finials. The masonry of the church is of brick and provided with ashlar drip mouldings, lintel mouldings and weatherings. Against the facades stand, depending on the height, two or three times cut buttresses. The facades are finished with a herringbone arch frieze and dentil mouldings. A portal is built into the tower, with small columns against the reveals, transitioning into archvolts. In the arch drum a limestone tympanum is installed with a representation from the life of Saint Nicholas. The hinged wooden door has decorative wrought-iron fittings. The whole is crowned by a gable, above which, among other things, is a pointed arch window with an eight-lobed rose on lancets. In the southern facades of the side aisles, hinged doors are also installed under a gable. Striking are the high ashlar pinnacles that crown the southern masonry of the side aisles and flank the tower. In the clerestory of the nave, transept and choir bays are pointed arch triplets, while pointed arch windows with double lancets, crowned by an oculus, are found in the transept closures and apse. In the ambulatory realised between the buttresses of the choir are series of two or four small pointed arch windows.

Against the east and west sides of the choir stand two single-storey additions belonging to the original construction under a gabled roof with hip, including the sacristy. On the side of the Kerkstraat a series of four pointed arch windows, provided with theft bars, are installed in the masonry of the addition, as well as a plaque with the inscription: "1940-1945 / in memory of those who fell as victims of war violence", followed by a list of names. In the interior are important, among other things, the Neo-Gothic high altar (J.Thissen, Roermond 1899), the Mary altar (J.Thissen, Roermond 1900), the ashlar stone baptismal font (1500) with copper lid (1912), two Neo-Gothic confessionals (ca. 1900), fourteen unpolychromed statues (J.Thissen, Roermond, one signed, ca. 1900), the stained glass Neo-Gothic windows by Nicolas (ca. 1900), with among others scenes from the life of Christ, the twelve apostles and the twelve articles of faith, and 28 grisaille windows. Furthermore, some fourteen stations of the cross by Karel Beyaert, Bruges, 1905.

In the building stand neo-gothic oak church pews, which are presumed to have been made around 1900 in Roermond.

Valuation

The church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as a special expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the three-aisled parish church. The building has architectural-historical importance through its style and detailing and is of art-historical importance through its interior components. The building is also of importance as an example of architect Franssen's oeuvre, in particular as representative of the way in which he adapted his standard church plan to the rural situation. It has been preserved in good condition.
