Inleiding
SIGARENFABRIEK uit 1908 met OPSLAGLOODS gebouwd voor de familie Philipsen van Hussen, die onder de naam "Kansas" hun producten op de markt bracht. Nu woonhuis - Café Tapperij Kansas met atelier.
Omschrijving
De voormalige fabriek is een langwerpig bouwwerk onder mansardedak met overstek en houten windveren met een versprongen dakvoet. De noordgevel bevat twee en de zuidgevel drie bouwlagen. De buitenmuren zijn opgetrokken uit witte machinale kalkzandsteen met horizontale banden bij de boven- en onderkanten van de vensters en rune-achtige symbolen in dezelfde steensoort maar dan in roze. Boven de muuropeningen bevinden zich betonnen lateien en getoogde ontlastingsbogen met in kleur contrasterende aanzet- en sluitstenen ten opzichte van de rest van het metselwerk. De vensters bevatten een vier- en zesruitsverdeling. In de zuidgevel een originele reclameschildering van de voormalige sigarenfabriek Kansas. De indeling van de fabriek is met uitzondering van de tweede en derde verdieping nauwelijks gewijzigd.
De opslagloods staat achter tegen de westgevel van de fabriek. Deze is een laag hoog en bevat een zadeldak.
Waardering
De voormalige sigarenfabriek is van algemeen belang. Het gebouw heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling van de nijverheid en als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van de hoogbouw voor de sigarenindustrie. Description
The former factory is an elongated structure with a mansard roof, overhang and wooden wind vanes with a stepped roof edge. The north gable contains two storeys and the south gable three storeys. The external walls are constructed of white machine-made calcium silicate brick with horizontal bands at the top and bottom edges of the windows and rune-like symbols in the same stone type but in pink. Above the wall openings are concrete lintels and arched relieving arches with colour-contrasting setting and closing stones in relation to the rest of the masonry. The windows contain four and six-pane glazing. In the south gable an original advertising painting of the former Kansas cigar factory. The layout of the factory has scarcely been altered except for the second and third storeys.
The storage shed stands behind against the west gable of the factory. This is single storey and contains a gabled roof.
Valuation
The former cigar factory is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical significance as an example of the socio-economic development of industry and as an example of the typological development of high-rise construction for the cigar industry. It has architectural-historical significance because of the style and ornamentation and as an example of the applied combination of building materials, including calcium silicate brick.
