Inleiding
FRATERHUIS "Aloysius" met PATRONAAT gebouwd in Neo-Renaissancestijl in de jaren 1887 en 1900, door architect W. van Aalst (Tilburg), voor de congregatie van de fraters van O.L.Vr. Moeder van Barmhartigheid te Tilburg. Thans is het gebouw een onderdeel van het voorgebouw van de schouwburg. De schouwburg zelf behoort niet tot de bescherming.
Omschrijving
Tweelaags bakstenen bouwwerk op L-vormige plattegrond onder schilddak. Het bevat een tien-traveeën brede symmetrische voorgevel met middenrisaliet bekroond door een trapgevel met smeedijzeren windwijzer. In het muurwerk een driepasmotief waaronder een Aloysiusbeeld in nis. De monumentale voordeur heeft neogotische detaillering in lijsten, raamprofielen en dakkapellen, Daarnaast heeft het een rijke toepassing van hardsteen, onder andere bij aanzet- en sluitstenen, horizontale banden en plint. De voorgevel bevat kruisvensters onder segment-, ellips- en of rondbogen. De boogvullingen en de fries zijn voorzien van siermetselwerk. In de Fraterstraat is het gebouw drie traveeën breed en voorzien van hoekpilasters en een blindvenster. In de achtergevel bevindt zich achter de middenrisaliet van de voorgevel een tweelaags uitbouw onder zadeldak. Deze is voorzien van blokpleisterwerk. Aan twee zijden is het fratershuis ingesloten door de schouwburg, die na 1957 in verschillende fasen tot stand is gekomen. De indeling van het gesticht is nauwelijks gewijzigd. Wel is het aangepast voor een meervoudig gebruik. Het linker gedeelte bevat nog de oude trapopgang met open bordes tussen de verdiepingen in de gang.
Waardering
Het Aloysiusgesticht is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een geestelijke ontwikkeling, namelijk de bloei van congregaties in de negentiende eeuw en is tevens van belang als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van het congregatieklooster. Description
Two-storey brick building on an L-shaped plan under a hipped roof. It contains a ten-bay-wide symmetrical front facade with a central projection crowned by a stepped gable with wrought-iron weathervane. In the brickwork a trifoliate motif beneath which an Aloysius statue in a niche. The monumental front door has neo-gothic detailing in mouldings, window profiles and roof dormers. Besides this, it has a rich application of hardstone, among other things at base and keystone stones, horizontal bands and plinth. The front facade contains cross windows under segment, ellipse and round arches. The arch infills and the frieze are provided with decorative brickwork. In the Fraterstraat the building is three bays wide and provided with corner pilasters and a blind window. In the rear facade is behind the central projection of the front facade a two-storey extension under a gabled roof. This is provided with rusticated rendering. On two sides the friary is enclosed by the theatre, which from 1957 onwards has been built in different phases. The layout of the institute is scarcely altered. It has been adapted for multiple uses. The left section still contains the old staircase with an open landing between the storeys in the corridor.
Valuation
The Aloysius institute is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as an example of spiritual development, namely the flourishing of congregations in the nineteenth century and is also important as an example of the typological development of the congregation cloister.
