Inleiding
KERKHOFKAPEL uit 1898 in neogotische stijl en SCHANSMUUR. De kerkhofkapel ligt in het verlengde van de centrale as van het kerkhof.
De kapel is een schenking van Maria Tummers en Petrus de Hamer. Het ontwerp is van architect P.J.H. Cuypers. Aan de noord- en westkant van het kerkhof waarop deze kapel staat ligt een bakstenen schansmuur voorzien van ezelsrug. Aan de oostkant wordt het kerkhof begrensd door de rond 1970-1980 aangelegde Maasboulevard.
Omschrijving
De kapel is een rechthoekig gebouwtje in schoon metselwerk met speklagen van natuursteen en hardstenen plint onder een leien wolfdak. In het metselwerk zijn profielstenen toegepast, zowel bij de ingangspartij als onder de goot en bij het basement. Links en rechts van de spitsboogingang twee engelen gehakt in Franse kalksteen. Inwendig netgewelf met polychroomwerk en geornamenteerde tegellambrizering. Het interieur bevat een retabel met calvariegroep met de beelden van Petrus en Elisabeth patroons der schenkers. In de kapel gekleurd tegelwerk in diverse patronen.
Een smeedijzeren hekje sluit de binnenruimte af. Het dak wordt bekroond door een smeedijzeren kruis met doornenkroon. De houten bakgoten hebben gestoken boeiboorden. Aan drie zijden van de kapel een hardstenen stoep met tegelwerk-vulling en tien hardstenen stoeppalen, die van boven naar beneden in doorsnede verlopen van rond tot acht- en vierkant. De schansmuur behoort tot het monument.
Waardering
Kapel en schansmuur zijn van algemeen belang. Het geheel heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale en geestelijke ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de ontwikkeling van de katholieke grafcultuur, het is tevens van belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van de kerkhofkapel. CEMETERY CHAPEL from 1898 in neo-Gothic style and RAMPART WALL. The cemetery chapel lies in the extension of the central axis of the cemetery.
The chapel is a gift from Maria Tummers and Petrus de Hamer. The design is by architect P.J.H. Cuypers. On the north and west sides of the cemetery on which this chapel stands lies a brick rampart wall provided with saddle back. On the east side the cemetery is bounded by the Maasboulevard laid out around 1970-1980.
Description
The chapel is a rectangular building in exposed brickwork with stone bands of natural stone and sandstone plinth under a slate half-hipped roof. Moulding stones are used in the brickwork, both at the entrance section and under the gutter and at the basement. To the left and right of the pointed arch entrance two angels carved in French limestone. Internally net vault with polychrome work and ornamented tile dado. The interior contains a retable with calvary group with statues of Petrus and Elisabeth, patrons of the donors. In the chapel coloured tilework in various patterns.
A wrought-iron railing closes off the interior space. The roof is crowned by a wrought-iron cross with crown of thorns. The wooden rain gutters have set barge boards. On three sides of the chapel a sandstone step with tilework infill and ten sandstone bollards, which from top to bottom in cross-section vary from round to octagonal and square. The rampart wall is part of the monument.
Valuation
Chapel and rampart wall are of general interest. The whole has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a social and spiritual development, in particular the development of Catholic burial culture, it is also of importance for the typological development of the cemetery chapel. It has architectural and art-historical importance as an example of the work of the architect P.J.H. Cuypers. It has ensemble values as part of a larger whole that is of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban planning importance. It has been preserved intact and is a rare example from the later period of the work of the master builder Cuypers.
