Inleiding
Rooms-katholieke pseudobasilikale KRUISKERK O.L.V.
Waardering
Geboorte.

Description
Introduction
Roman Catholic pseudo-basilica CRUCIFORM CHURCH OF THE BIRTH OF THE VIRGIN, built in 1884 in Neo-Gothic style designed by architect E.J. Margry.
Description
Three-aisled pseudo-basilica cruciform church with on the east side a five-sided choir and on the west side a square entrance tower. The church has five bays and an eastern transept that barely projects beyond the side aisles. On the north side of the tower is a rectangular baptistry, on the south side an entrance portal. On either side of the choir is a rectangular chapel.
The octagonal spire, as well as the various roofs - the composite gabled roof of the nave and transept, the aisle roofs above the side aisles and the gabled roofs and spires on the roof dormers - are covered with slate in Maas covering. The ridges are crowned with ridge cresting, the ridge at the transition to the choir passage has a Latin cross, the tower spire has a crowning with cross and weathercock.
The church is constructed of red brick laid in English bond. At a number of structural points natural stone is used. The exterior is articulated vertically by stepped buttresses, rusticated corner sections and pointed-arch windows in the wall planes between them. A rusticated plinth, drip mouldings and tooth mouldings under the eaves form a horizontal articulation. The nearly universal three-part windows of the nave consist of two coupled pointed-arch windows under a rose window. The transept has similar windows in larger format provided with a frame in the form of a large pointed arch. The choir has five tall individual pointed-arch windows. All windows are provided with stained glass, wholly or partly with painted glass.
The west tower consists of three sections of unequal height, crowned by the mentioned spire. The first storey contains the main entrance of the church. This main entrance is crowned by a statue of the Virgin and consists of a double oak door with rich ironwork, under a pointed-topped fanlight with stained glass. The taller middle storey contains a multi-part pointed-arch window with an integrated rose window in the apex. The third tall storey contains on each side three coupled vertical lights with above three coupled vertical sound holes. The tower is closed by an arch frieze with cornice. The tower spire has on four sides a clock under (small) projecting gable ends and gabled roofs.
The interior of the church is largely preserved in its original state. The nave has a two-part elevation consisting of arcade and triforium. The arcade has round pillars with base and capital, the crossing has composite pillars. The nave and the transept have wooden pointed barrel vaults with decorative paintings. The barrel vault of the nave moreover has cast-iron ventilation grilles. The side aisles and the choir are covered with four-part cross-ribbed vaults in red and yellow brick. The interior contains among other things high altar and side altars, the pew arrangement, confessionals, a baptismal font and polychrome painted holy figures. Around 1925, polychrome tile tableaux were installed in the church. These are located near the entrance portal, in the transept arms and in the baptistry. Two-manual pneumatic organ made by the firm P.J. Adema and Zonen in 1898.
Valuation
The Neo-Gothic cruciform church is of general importance from an architectural and cultural-historical point of view as a good example of Roman Catholic ecclesiastical architecture from the fourth quarter of the nineteenth century, in which among other things the quality of the design, the intactness of the exterior and the original and around 1925 enriched interior are notable. The church building has moreover important situational value and forms the historically-functionally main component of the church complex of the Birth of the Virgin.
