Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
Former RAILWAY BRIDGE, part of the Langstraat Line, nowadays in use as part of a cycling route between Drunen and Waalwijk. The bridge is located on the northwestern side of the built-up area of Drunen over the provincial road to Waalwijk. The abutments were constructed in 1881 by the firm J.A. van der Eerden Wzn. from Boxtel; the iron superstructure with truss girders in 1885 by the Royal factory for Steam and other machinery. Until 30 October 1944 the bridge, together with the one over the Overstortweg, formed part of the much longer bridge over the Baardwijkse Overlaat. For this, some openings had already been replaced by an earthen embankment in 1923 and 1924. The original bridge was partly blown up by the Germans in 1944. After the war, 43 of the original 53 spans of the bridge were replaced by a dike. Drunen then ultimately had two separate small railway bridges and Waalwijk one large one of approximately 160 metres. On 28 May 1972 the line was closed for all traffic and in 1987 the rails on the section were lifted. From this point on various foundations worked successfully for the preservation of the bridges. End of 1991 - beginning of 1992 saw the restoration and opening of the bridges as part of a cycling route between Drunen and Waalwijk.
Description.
The wrought-iron railway bridge has two riveted truss main girders with longitudinal and transverse members, reinforced with a sub-bracing system. The bridge has riveted, composite, deck girders. Truss with parallel chords, verticals and diagonals. The six central fields also have counter-diagonals. The strips of these diagonals become increasingly narrower towards the middle. The total span of the bridge is approximately 48 metres. The clearance height is 3.1 metres. The bridge has abutments of brick and concrete. The capping plate is also of concrete. Two piers with chamfered corners and concrete capping plates. During the restoration in 1991-1992 the rails were removed and planks of Finnish pine with a protective layer were laid. A metal handrail was also installed.
Valuation.
The railway bridge is of general importance. The bridge has cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of socio-economic technical and landscape developments, in particular those of the development of railway connections in the Langstraat. The bridge has architectural-historical importance for the history of building technology. The bridge has ensemble values as an essential component of the Langstraat Line.
