Inleiding.
BEDRIJFSGEBOUW met KANTOOR en WOONHUIS, gebouwd naar ontwerp van architect J. Luyben in Traditionalistische stijl voor de firma Mommersteeg (zaadhandel). Het oudste deel is in de jaren twintig gebouwd. Een grote uitbreiding, rechts, tegen de reeds bestaande bouwmassa aan, vond plaats in 1936. Achter dit gebouw liggen grote hallen en proefvelden. De hallen zijn na de oorlog gebouwd en worden, evenals de proefvelden niet beschermd.
Omschrijving.
Samengestelde bouwmassa van diverse haaks op elkaar staande bouwdelen, gedeeltelijk onder lessenaarsdaken, grotendeels onder een plat dak. De lessenaarsdaken hebben overstekken op klossen. De bouwmassa op de linkerhoek bestaat uit twee haaks op elkaar staande voorgebouwen. Het meest linkse gedeelte is drie lagen hoog, rechts daarvan staat een vierlaagse bouwmassa, beiden onder lessenaarsdak. Aan de straat zijn deze elementen met elkaar verbonden door een gemetselde poort met smeedijzeren hekwerk. Erachter ligt een grote, drielaagse hal onder plat dak.
De linkerbouwmassa is een dienstwoning, rechts daarvan en in het achterliggende gedeelte zijn kantoren en opslagruimte gehuisvest. Op de begane grond bevinden zich in voor- en zijgevels grote liggende ramen met metalen kozijnen en roedenverdeling. Op de bovenliggende verdiepingen zijn de ramen staand en worden steeds kleiner. Boven de ramen zijn in het metselwerk bogen aangebracht, onder de bogen zijn, in reliëf geometrische patronen ingemetseld.
Rechts daarvan, iets terugliggend staat een langgerekte bouwmassa, drielaags onder plat dak. Geheel links op de begane grond bevindt zich de ingang, rechts daarvan zijn brede rechthoekige ramen gezet, gedeeltelijk aan het zicht onttrokken door een moderne zonwering. De ramen erboven zijn veel kleiner. Alle ramen hebben metalen kozijnen met een kleine roedenverdeling. Bovenaan de gevel een kroonlijst met geometrische patronen in baksteenreliëf.
Op de rechterhoek opnieuw een iets naar voren uitstekend bouwlichaam onder lessenaarsdak met ramen als in de overige gedeeltes. De achtergevel heeft staande ramen met metalen kozijnen, overeenkomstig de ramen van de overige gevels.
In het interieur is de indeling in grote lijnen bewaard gebleven. De constructie, houten plafonds en metalen kolommen (I-profielen) is in de opslagruimten nog zichtbaar. In de rechter uitbreiding heeft het lessenaarsdak een betonnen constructie. Delen van de inrichting zijn gemoderniseerd.
In het rechtergedeelte bevindt zich een grote ruimte, thans vergaderzaal, met een muurschildering van Eppo Doeve uit de jaren veertig van de 20ste eeuw.
Waardering.
Het gebouw is van algemeen belang. het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische en typologische ontwikkeling. INDUSTRIAL BUILDING with OFFICE and DWELLING HOUSE, built to the design of architect J. Luyben in Traditionalist style for the firm Mommersteeg (seed merchant). The oldest part was built in the nineteen-twenties. A major extension, to the right, against the already existing building mass, took place in 1936. Composite building mass of various building elements at right angles to one another, partly under lean-to roofs, mostly under a flat roof. The lean-to roofs have overhangs on corbels. The building mass at the left corner consists of two building elements at right angles to one another. The leftmost section is three storeys high, to the right of it stands a four-storey building mass, both under lean-to roof. At the street these elements are connected to one another by a masonry gateway with wrought-iron fencing. Behind it lies a large three-storey hall under a flat roof.
The left building mass is a service dwelling; to its right and in the rear section offices and storage space are housed. On the ground floor large horizontal windows with metal frames and glazing bars are located in the front and side facades. On the upper storeys the windows are vertical and become progressively smaller. Above the windows arches are created in the masonry; beneath the arches geometric patterns are inlaid in relief in the brickwork.
To the right of it, slightly set back, stands an elongated building mass, three storeys under a flat roof. At the far left on the ground floor is the entrance; to its right are broad rectangular windows placed, partially obscured from view by modern sun-shading. The windows above are much smaller. All windows have metal frames with small glazing bars. At the top of the facade a cornice with geometric patterns in brick relief.
At the right corner again a slightly protruding building element under a lean-to roof with windows as in the other sections. The rear facade has vertical windows with metal frames, corresponding to the windows of the other facades.
In the interior the layout is preserved in broad outline. The structure, wooden ceilings and metal columns (I-beams) is still visible in the storage areas. In the right extension the lean-to roof has a concrete structure. Parts of the interior have been modernized.
In the right section is a large space, now a meeting room, with a mural painting by Eppo Doeve from the nineteen-forties.
Valuation.
The building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as an expression of social-economic and typological development. It has architectural-historical importance due to its significance for the history of architecture and due to its ornamentation.
