Omschrijving
Inleiding.
HERENHUIS en NOTARISKANTOOR, gebouwd in 1903 in opdracht van notaris J. Mertens, in Neo-Renaissancestijl. Het pand bleef tot 1917 in gebruik als notariskantoor, tot 1935 werd de woonbestemming gehandhaafd. Daarna heeft het dienst gedaan als brood- en banketbakkerij met lunchroom. Thans heeft het pand een horeca-functie, in combinatie met een bovenwoning.
Het huis is half vrijstaand, links grenst het aan jongere bebouwing, de rechtergevel staat vrij, aangrenzend is een poortje in bakstenen omlijsting zichtbaar.
Omschrijving.
Drielaags pand op een rechthoekige plattegrond. De voorgevel is vier traveeën breed. Van het pand is de eerste travee in de diepte onder een zadeldak geplaatst waarvan de nok evenwijdig aan de straat loopt. Daarachter staat een lagere bouwmassa onder haaks zadeldak. Het pand is uitgevoerd in rode verblendsteen, de speklagen zijn met afwisselend witte en blauwe verblendsteen uitgevoerd. De voorgevel is van een hardstenen plint voorzien. Bovenaan is een gestucte kroonlijst aangebracht. De rechterzijgevel van de achteraanbouw is gepleisterd uitgevoerd.
Het dak is gedekt met leien in Maasdekking.
Op de begane grond worden de middelste twee traveeën in beslag genomen door een vermoedelijk na 1935 aangebracht groot etalageraam, rechts daarvan is een smal raam met segmentboogvormig bovenlicht aangebracht. Links in de gevel bevindt zich een smal portiek met hardstenen treden en een deur. De buitenste traveeën op de eerste verdieping hebben T-ramen, de middelste twee traveeën zijn van openslaande deuren voorzien met één doorlopend balkon op consoles, voorzien van een balustrade met balusters. Boven deze ramen en deuren zijn de ontlastingsbogen uitgevoerd als rondbogen in witte steen, de boogvelden zijn opgevuld met stucwerk. Op de tweede verdieping zijn T-ramen onder segmentbogen aangebracht, de boogvelden zijn opgevuld met stucwerk. In het dakvlak aan de voorzijde bevinden zich vier dakkapelletjes onder zadeldak met windveer en piron.
Waardering.
Het object is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, met name de schaalvergroting van het Roosendaalse marktplein.
