Inleiding.

Introduction.

CHAPEL, built in 1897 according to the design of M. Vergouwen. The small chapel is executed in Neo-Romanesque style with elements of Neo-Gothic. The ground has been in the possession of the Van Gilse family since 1882, the construction took place on the initiative of Mr. A. van Gilse.

The building is located on the chapel hill beside a raised road, on the site where a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Seven Sorrows has long stood.

Description.

Chapel on octagonal floor plan with projecting entrance and octagonal tambour with spire. The whole is executed in half-timbering with brick infill. The building has a hardstone plinth and is provided with a wooden cornice. The roofs are covered with slate in Maas bond. The chapel has a single-storey ambulatory under running lean-to roof. The roof has an overhang on corbels. Originally this ambulatory was open, soon after the chapel was put into use it was converted into a closed space and provided with windows. In each facade panel pointed-arch windows are located, arranged in groups of three. The windows are filled with stained glass with Christian symbols such as the Lamb of God and the Alpha and Omega in the central window and have sandstone reveals and lintels. In the rear elevation the original windows have been replaced by windows with depictions of the foundation legend of the chapel. On the front side a stepped gable with entrance, a double panelled door with stained-glass fanlight is placed. The whole is set in a moulded wooden frame. In the round arch above it the inscription SANCTAE/ DEI MATRI MARIAE/ CONSOLATRICI AFFLICTORIUM/ SACRUM is legible. In the stepped gable above the portal three round stones with cross are placed. In the interior the central section on the side and rear is parallel to the ambulatory and executed in half-timbering with brick infill. The sides are provided with large windows above which round arches with a plastered arch field are arranged. On the outside of the windows are images of the seven sorrows of Mary hung. At the front a wrought-iron railing. Behind it under the tambour stands a wooden Mary altar from 1947. The round windows in the tambour are filled with painted stained glass. The floor is tiled. The access road is planted on both sides with plane trees. Around the chapel lime trees are planted.

Valuation.

The chapel with avenue and chapel hill is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a reminder of the old devotion to Mary at this location and is also important as an expression of Catholic spiritual life. The building has architectural-historical value because of its exceptional type and design. It is a good example of how the old type of central building could be used up to the middle of the 19th century to enhance the consecration of a place regarded as sacred. The building has been well preserved.
