The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

Double DWELLING HOUSE, built in 1904 in chalet style, at the behest of the Dekkers family. In 1941 the house was converted into two dwellings. The building is placed on one of four corners of the intersection Damstraat - Wilhelminastraat. Although each is built differently, the corners give a good period image; together they reflect the original character of the neighbourhood. In 1993 a thorough restoration of the corner building took place.

Description.

The house has an L-shaped floor plan, the largest part of which is placed under a gabled roof parallel to the streets. The ends of the facades are provided with a risalit with a stepped gable under a gabled roof with a shield on the back. The building has a chamfered corner with a stepped gable under a steep roof with half-hipped end. On the Wilhelminastraat side the house has a single-storey extension under a gabled roof. In the extension of this lies a garden wall. The whole is executed in brick, provided with a hardstone plinth and plastered brick-on-edge courses at the height of the under- and over-eaves of the windows. The moulded segmental arches above the rectangular windows on the ground floor are executed in brick of a different colour with a white keystone. Polychrome brick mosaic is applied in the spandrels. In the corner risalits are broad rectangular windows above which a broad band with brick mosaic is visible. Above these are three narrow windows with white natural stone blocks at the top. Above the middle window is a horseshoe arch with diamond head on the keystone, the natural stone runs horizontally above the other little windows on either side. Below the window in the chamfered corner and between the consoles under the eaves line brick mosaic is also applied. In both facades next to the risalit is a shallow portico under a segmental arch. Via some hardstone steps a panel door is reached. The doors have wrought iron grilles; in a fanlight of Damstraat 40 glass-in-lead with flower motif is visible. Other fanlights are executed soberly. The roof is covered with interlocking tiles and provided with a terracotta decorative ridge. The chamfered corner is an exception; here the roof is covered with slates. The stepped gables have finials. Around the stepped gables are wind braces with wooden false rafters. The extension under a lean-to roof has a rising frieze; halfway up the facade a brick-on-edge course is visible. This intersects a small round window. The adjoining garden wall is also executed in brick and is articulated by higher bonded pilaster strips with a natural stone crown. The planes have a tooth pattern at the top. The gate is placed between brick piers, also with natural stone crowning in the form of a coping plate with fan motif on which a sort of pomegranate is placed.

Valuation.

The building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as a specimen of socio-economic development and the expansion of the city. It has architectural-historical importance because of the building style, the balanced composition and the use of materials. It has ensemble values through the striking corner location. It has been preserved intact.
