Introduction

LEATHER TANNERY and SHOE FACTORIES of the firm Vermeulen. The business was established in 1784 and was located from 1821 in a residence on the Kerkstraat. In 1891 a tannery was built behind the house. This industrial building was raised in 1931.

To the left against the main mass stands an older section of the tannery, now converted into a residence (Kerkstraat 6). On the right side the building was later extended with a single-storey outbuilding. The interior is divided into different functions including a shoe shop.

The residence from which the factory started is located at Kerkstraat 2A/4. This building falls outside the protection.

Description

Three-storey brick building on a rectangular floor plan under a gabled roof whose ridge runs parallel to the street. The roof is covered with Dutch tiles. The top storey of both long facades has a wooden cladding. Large windows with metal frames, provided with small glazing bars, are placed in it. On the ground floor there are several doors and windows with metal frames, as well as on the second storey, provided with small glazing bars. The windows on the first storey are smaller, have a arched form with metal frames. The gable ends are provided with wind vanes with ornaments. In the left side facade is a round window. The right side facade has a hatch with hoisting device at the top. A small window is placed on either side of it. Against this side facade is a two-storey outbuilding under a flat roof. Against the left side facade stands a block-shaped building mass, older than the main mass (Kerkstraat 6). This two-storey brick building has a square floor plan under a gabled roof. The ridge runs parallel to the ridge of the main mass. The front facade has windows with metal frames on the ground floor and on the storey. On the ground floor twelve-paned windows, on the storey four-paned windows. The upper strip of the facade is provided with wooden cladding. In the left side facade are round-arched windows and shutters in the middle. Small windows are placed on either side of them. In front of this block a single-storey block-shaped office was added in 1931. A large composite window is placed in the facade facing the street. The left side facade has a door and now provides access to the residence, Kerkstraat 6. The rear facade itself is provided with wooden cladding with shutters and windows with wooden frames. In the interior of the main mass the division has been maintained in broad outline. Wooden beams are present in the construction in the older section. In the newer section iron beams were also used. The lower storeys are in use as a shoe shop and storage. On the top storey there is still a pulley to hoist material.

Valuation

The tannery annexed to the shoe factory is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as an expression of the socio-economic development of the leather tannery and as an example of the typological development of high-rise construction for the leather tannery. It has ensemble value because of its location, connected with the development of the region. It is important because of the intactness of the whole.
