Inleiding.

Introduction.

The TOWN HALL of the former municipality of Chaam was designed in 1940 and built in 1941 in Traditionalist style according to designs by architect C.P. Schellekens from Dongen and executed by contractor C. Schaffelaars from Rijen. It stands in the village centre at a triangular square. The plot adjoins the former constable's cottage and is surrounded by low walls with half-hipped roof coping. A preliminary design from 1939 with rich detailing and octagonal corner towers with pear-shaped finials remained unexecuted.

Description.

The town hall is constructed from large-format imitation hand-moulded brick. It comprises two storeys with a substantial gabled roof with inclined roof planes. The building has a slightly raised floor level. The front elevation has an asymmetrical composition with in the centre an entrance beneath a segmental arch with blocked ornamental framing in brick and tuff stone. Double door with small glazing. Stoop with wrought-iron railing. Above the entrance on the upper storey a false French balcony with glazed window and wrought-iron ornamental railing. To the left of the entrance on the ground floor one and on the upper storey two 12-pane iron windows in wooden frame. To the right on the ground floor two small and high-set iron windows with six-pane glazing. Above on the upper storey two narrow and tall segmental arch windows with 12-pane glazing. The elevation is terminated by a moulded arch frieze. To the right a slightly lower extension, which was possibly heightened to two storeys around 1950. Here on the ground floor one and on the upper storey two 12-pane windows. The left elevation has a spout gable with substantial shoulders and coping. Low bay window under a half-hipped roof with 12-pane segmental arch window of the mayor's office. Beside it a window with fine glazing bars. On the upper storey above the extension two six-pane segmental arch windows and a stone cartouche with the municipal coat of arms. At the base of the top gable the date anchors 1941. Above a four-pane window beneath a round arch. In the rear elevation windows of the lower storey with iron fine glazing bars. On the upper storey six-, 12- and 16-pane windows. Arch frieze beneath the gutter. In the right elevation of the extension casement windows with fine glazing bars. The interior is very well preserved. Entrance and ticket hall with fair-faced brickwork and panelling of green glazed brick. Cloister vaults. Municipal coat of arms in stained glass. Memorial stone of construction in 1941 in black glass. Ticket windows with sash windows beneath segmental arch. Mayor's office with oak parquet, panelling and beam floors. Bay window with segmental arch. Wrought-iron crown and paintings with farmer and farmer's wife and pastoral scene by Gerrit de Morée applied in 1942. In the extension glass wall with green cathedral glass. All rooms have oak panelled doors. In the upper hall brick trough vaults on concrete beams. Little owl above the door of the former council chamber. Flooring of Sollenhofen stone and wrought-iron stair railing. In the hall glazed windows with municipal coat of arms, the church tower destroyed in 1944 and the former town hall. In the council chamber fireplace with cupboards and painted cross and coat of arms by De Morée. Wrought-iron chandelier.

Valuation.

The town hall is of general importance. It has cultural-historical significance as an example of social-economic and administrative development, namely the establishment of town halls for the administrative apparatus in growing rural municipalities and as an example of the typological development of the village town hall. It has architectural-historical value on account of the style and as an example of the oeuvre of architect Schellekens. It is moreover valuable on account of the material use and careful ornamentation. The object is important on account of the integrity of its interior and exterior and as an example of such a village town hall is rare.
