Inleiding.
Het DUBBELE WOONHUIS werd gebouwd in 1884 in Neorenaissance stijl met elementen van Chaletstijl door architect C.P. van Genk als zijn eigen woning. Het pand vormt de markante afsluiting van de Stationsstraat en de Wassenaarstraat. Het gebouw herbergt nu winkels, waarvoor rond 1980 de benedenramen gewijzigd en de onderdorpels verlaagd zijn.
Omschrijving.
Het tweelaagse hoekpand met drielaagse achthoekige toren is opgetrokken uit machinale baksteen met natuursteen speklagen. De gevels bezitten rijk gedecoreerde sierankers. Het afgeplatte schilddak kraagt ver over op houten schoren. De schilden van dit dak en van het steekkapje aan de noordzijde zijn gedekt met leien in maasdekking (voor nr. 12 zijn dit namaak leien van butuum). Deze liggen ook op de ingesnoerde achtzijdige naaldspits van de toren. De vereenvoudige vensters zijn voorzien van veelkleurig metselmozaïek in de borstwering en in de boogtrommels. Op de begane grond hebben de vensters een segmentbogige afsluiting, op de verdieping een rondboog en in de bovenste geleding van de toren een korfboog. Lateien, aanzetstenen en sluitstenen zijn van natuursteen. De sluitstenen zijn voorzien van diverse gebeeldhouwde kopjes. De pui van nummer 12 is geheel gewijzigd. Dit deel van twee traveeën is opgevat als eenheid door het afsluitende steekkapje met tweelichts raam onder segmentboog. Het overstek rust op schoren en heeft onder de bolpiron een Chaletstijl vulling met hout. De pui van nummer 12a, bestaande uit twee traveeën, is deels vernieuwd maar bezit nog wel de segmentboog-afsluiting. De raamdorpels zijn verlaagd en er zijn luifels toegevoegd. In het blinde gedeelte dat aansluit op de toren bevindt zich op de begane grond een gevelsteen in hoogreliëf. In de cartouche zijn de attributen van de architect afgebeeld, zoals passer en tekenpapier. Op de eerste etage is er een gevelsteen met in de cartouche het jaartal 1884. De hoge en fors geproportioneerde toren heeft in de spits twee rijen dakkapellen met driepas- en rondboogkapjes. Deze zijn net als de spits zelf voorzien van een piron. In het portiek, gevormd door de toren en de uitspringende massa daanrnaast, bevindt zich de hardstenen trap naar Wassenaarstraat 2. De trap wordt omlijst door gedecoreerde ijzeren leuningen en een hek. De brede vleugeldeur is voorzien van zwaar smeedwerk en kussenpanelen. In het inspringende dakvlak van deze travee is een dakkapel met driepas geplaatst. De gevel ter linkerzijde van het portiek is op een klein rondraam na blind uitgevoerd. De achtergevel is voorzien van reeksen vereenvoudigde vensters onder segmentboog met metselmozaïek.
Waardering.
Het pand is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling. Het heeft architectuurhistorisch bijzonder door de stijl en is verder van belang in het oeuvre van C.P. van Genk, die het bouwde als zijn eigen woonhuis. Het is belangrijk vanwege het materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek. Het pand is als hoekoplossing een essentieel onderdeel van het singelgebied dat nationaal van belang is. The two-storey corner building with three-storey octagonal tower is constructed of machine-made brick with natural stone ashlar courses. The facades have richly decorated ornamental wall anchors. The flattened hipped roof overhangs considerably on wooden corbels. The hips of this roof and of the gabled roof on the north side are covered with slates in Dutch bond (for no. 12 these are imitation slates of bitumen). These also lie on the constricted octagonal needle spire of the tower. The simplified windows are provided with multicoloured brick mosaic in the parapet and in the arch voussoirs. On the ground floor the windows have a segmental arch closure, on the first floor a round arch and in the uppermost section of the tower a basket arch. Lintels, springer stones and keystones are of natural stone. The keystones are provided with various sculpted heads. The shop front of number 12 is entirely altered. This section of two bays is conceived as a unity by the closing gabled roof with two-light window under a segmental arch. The overhang rests on corbels and has below the ridge tile a Chalet-style infill with timber. The shop front of number 12a, consisting of two bays, is partly renewed but still possesses the segmental arch closure. The window sills are lowered and awnings have been added. In the blind section adjacent to the tower there is a high-relief facing stone on the ground floor. In the cartouche are depicted the attributes of the architect, such as compasses and drawing paper. On the first storey there is a facing stone with the date 1884 in the cartouche. The high and substantially proportioned tower has in the spire two rows of roof dormers with three-foil and round arch dormers. These, like the spire itself, are provided with a ridge tile. In the portico, formed by the tower and the projecting mass adjacent to it, is the sandstone staircase to Wassenaarstraat 2. The stairs are framed by decorated iron railings and a gate. The wide double door is provided with heavy wrought metalwork and cushion panels. In the recessing roof plane of this bay is a dormer with three-foil placed. The gable on the left side of the portico is executed blind except for a small circular window. The rear facade is provided with series of simplified windows under segmental arch with brick mosaic.
Valuation.
