The register's description

Inleiding.

Omschrijving.

Introduction.

The ONZE LIEVE VROUWE VAN LOURDESKERK was built between 1926 and 1928 to the design of Joseph and Pierre Cuypers jr. The style is softened Expressionism. The realised church differs greatly from the design from 1918 by Jac. van Gils which was not executed due to his death. In 1944 some adjoining rooms in the same style, the Lourdesgrot and the belfry were lost. The tower was rebuilt in 1955.

Description.

The church has a cruciform ground plan with half-round closed apse, a dominant twelve-sided dome, transept, entrance porch and a tower at the south-west corner. The facades are constructed of machine-made brickwork with simple decorative brickwork. Red improved Dutch roof tiles lie on the gabled roofs and the twelve-sided dome roof. Externally the church gives a closed impression due to the small window openings. A small entrance porch to the west of the belfry houses the pointed-arch double doors. In a low extension under a flat roof are situated right-angled double doors. To the right of the entrance porch is a small half-round window, on both sides of the roof there are two small and above them another larger round window. In the transepts large stained-glass windows have been placed and on the sides of the dome there are as aisle windows series of five narrow upright windows. Narrow upright windows are also found in the nave and choir.

The interior shows after the entrance porch a centrally-planned building with broad side aisles. The sobriety of the exterior is replaced here by skilled decorative brickwork in exposed brickwork with glazed decorative bands and various relief patterns. The large high open space is divided by four pillars with round arches. The twelve-sided dome has dark wooden roof trusses which contrast with the whitened vault surfaces. Parabolic arches have been built for the ambulatory and the Maria and St. Joseph chapel beside the apse. On the church floor lie square red tiles with yellow-black borders and cross patterns in yellow, black and blue. The apse, with decorative tiles in geometric pattern, has a herringbone vault with decorative diamond-shaped motif. Among the church furnishings are the embedded Stations of the Cross, high reliefs in white with light blue background and gold-coloured accents. By the entrance porch is a Lourdesgrot with stone from Lourdes, dated 15 August 1920. The large windows of the transepts have stained-glass figurative windows from 1939, signed by Clysen from Tilburg. The representations include Maria in mandorla, the birth of Maria, the birth of Jesus and the death of Maria.

Valuation.

The church is of general importance. The building is of cultural-historical importance as an example of a spiritual development and is of importance for the typological development of the centralising parish church. It is of architectural-historical importance by virtue of the style and the place in the oeuvre of the architects Cuypers. The building has ensemble value because of its situation near the parsonage, monastery and emergency church, connected with the development of the city and is also of importance for its appearance.
