Inleiding.

Inwendig gerenoveerd in 1989.

Introduction.

Hoofdlaan 8, MAIN BUILDING adjoining administration building from 1930 designed by B.T. Boeyinga in the Amsterdam School style. Internally renovated in 1989. In doing so a lift shaft was created whose structure projects above the roof. At the same time all original steel frames were replaced by plastic frames.

Description.

The main mass consists of a two- and partially three-storey building mass on an L-shaped plan, on the corner an octagonal tower. Executed as a concrete frame clad with brick. The building has a complex hipped roof covered with red roof tiles. The largest wing stands at right angles to the Hoofdlaan and has three storeys, partially with a basement. The roof plane continues at the gable ends. The southern facade has large windows beneath a continuous concrete band. Above this is a balcony across the entire width of the facade with brick parapet, behind it windows and doors. Perpendicular to the wing, close to the Hoofdlaan, stands an extension with a gabled roof with an octagonal bay window, three storeys high. On the ground floor and first floor rectangular windows are present, above this a projecting edge on which a large number of tall window openings filled with glass bricks stands. In the gable end two square windows. The north facade of this wing has on the ground floor rectangular windows beneath a continuous concrete band, above these small windows with glass bricks. On the upper floor rectangular windows with directly above them a large number of tall windows filled with glass bricks.

Behind the tower, which has an ambulatory and is crowned by a structure with a spire, is the portico with entrance beneath a concrete canopy. On the south side a single-storey extension with a hipped roof with at the end a rest area with benches beneath the roof overhang. The smaller wing, parallel to the Hoofdlaan is two storeys high. On the ground floor at the east facade windows beneath a continuous concrete band above which recumbent windows with glass bricks. On the upper floor square windows are placed. Against the west side, perpendicular to it, a single-storey building mass with a hipped roof has been built. This contains large windows. In the interior the layout has remained largely the same. The decoration of hall, corridors and staircase is also original. In the hall the walls up to wainscoting height are tiled with ochre- and green-coloured glazed tiles. Against the walls canted pilasters and light fittings in Art Deco style.

Valuation.

The main building is of general interest. It has cultural-historical importance as an expression of spiritual and social development, in particular the development of Christian care for the mentally disabled and as an expression of the particular typological development of patient housing in the Interbellum period. It has architectural-historical value: it is significant because of the particular and careful detailing and as an example of the work of architect Boeyinga and because of its style. Furthermore the object has ensemble values because of its relationship with the way the entire institution was arranged and equipped.
