The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

The STABLE belonging to the GERDAHOEVE was built in Expressionist style according to a design by J. Hurks and is the only example of agricultural building by his hand. Several stable windows have been given a simplified layout. The stable is placed at right angles to the Gerdahoeve.

Description.

The high stable has a rectangular floor plan and is covered by a partly asymmetrical parabolic roof with red improved Dutch roof tiles. The façades are built of machine-made brick, decorated with roll courses above the windows and doors and basketweave bond at the gable. The long north façade facing the street has a high rendered plinth and a regular distribution of arched windows with straight stable windows with black glazed sills and arched doors. Between every two windows there is one door with ironwork and black and white painted vertical planks. The west façade facing the dwelling house has on the ground floor three renewed stable windows and a stable door. A lintel above the centre indicates that there was originally a large double stable door here. The high gable with basketweave bond is slightly projected in brick and is provided with a hay loft opening with fanlight in decorative glazing bar pattern and a hexagonal ventilation louvre.

On the right the roof is separated by an indentation from the high rectangular chimney. This chimney which breaks through the roof at the corner allows the transition to the long south façade, with on the upper floor a series of band windows under a cantilevered wooden drip moulding. The layout of the ground floor with the arched stable windows and doors corresponds for the most part with that in the north façade. The east façade is the most elaborately executed. On the ground floor there are arched doors on the left and right, in the centre double closed stable doors. The entire gable above is provided with likewise black and white painted wooden planks. During a conversion in 1997 the lower part of the gable was provided with timber boarding and sliding doors. The vertical direction of this is interrupted by the casement shutters above the central door and the Expressionist decorative woodwork at the top. This façade is lit by four narrow windows. The stable has on the ground floor a large stabled section and next to the chimney a heating room. A stairs at this heating room gives access to the upper floor with hay loft, which is partly provided with a cement and partly with a wooden floor. The roof is supported by a pine roof truss structure. The roof tiles are finished on the inside with straw.

Valuation.

The stable is of general importance. The stable has cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of socio-economic and typological development. As a stable of a farmhouse in North Brabant the object is innovative. The building is architecturally valuable because of the style and the place in the oeuvre of the architect. It is important because of the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design and distinctive ornamentation. There is a distinctive cohesion between exterior and interior. The stable is important because of the integrity of exterior and interior and because of the functional rarity.
