Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Row of three two-aisled DWELLING HOUSES each with a ground-floor and upper-floor dwelling. The houses were built around 1900-1905 in neo-Renaissance style and are characterized by a cornice-topped facade with risalits, belt courses and birth and closing stones in white render, relieving arches and stretches in various variations and round-arched porticoes each with two coupled entrances.
The residential block is located in the southern part of the Sonsbeekkwartier near Graaf Ottoplein. This neighbourhood has a fork-shaped main structure oriented towards Graaf Ottoplein with short connecting streets, and was rapidly filled in with speculative construction of two storeys. The urban design plan for Graaf Ottoplein and its surroundings was executed according to the design of engineer J.W.C. TELLEGEN (1859-1921) who worked at Arnhem Municipal Works from 1887 to 1901, first as chief supervisor and from 1890 as director. In that capacity he was (jointly) responsible for the renovation of the Klarendal district, the purchase of the Sonsbeek estate and the expansion plans for Transvaalbuurt and Lombok. From 1901 to 1921 Tellegen was in the service of the municipality of Amsterdam, first as director of the Building and Housing Inspection Service and from 1915 as mayor.
The subject property is situated in the continuous western facade wall of Verhuellstraat, the connecting street running northward between Jacob Cremerstraat and St. Peterlaan. The residential block stands in the building line directly at the pavement.
Description
Partially cellared DWELLINGS of two storeys and attic on rectangular ground plan with two-storey flat-roofed extensions at the rear. The brick facades are laid in English bond. The attics are covered by a continuous hipped roof with the ridge parallel to the front facade. The roof is covered with laid Frisian tiles, which have been renewed at number 17. Several non-original wooden roof dormers with single-glazed casement windows have been inserted in the roof.
The FRONT FACADE is articulated horizontally by a grey-painted rendered plinth, belt courses of white render at the height of the lintels, a frieze with block dentil moulding, a closing corniced cornice which rests on corbelled masonry at the risalits. At the far left is a narrow rear passage incorporated in the first storey which closes off at street level with an iron door under an arched stretch with rendered birth and closing stones. The facade is otherwise rhythmically arranged with alternating two window bays and a risalit per house (2-1/2-1/2-1). The risalits have in the first storey a round-arched portico with rendered corbel stones, blocks and closing stone. The porticoes have hardstone floors and each two coupled entrances: worked panel doors with inspection windows and wrought-iron grilles (grilles at number 17 removed), profiled jambs and single-glazed fanlights. The entrances are separated from each other by a pilaster with mirrors and simple list capital. To the left of the risalits are each two window bays with in the plinth two rectangular cellar lights under blind segmental arches and in the first storey two rectangular windows with (T-)sash windows and fanlights. The second storey has a series of six rectangular windows with T-sash windows and fanlights. All windows are closed by a lintel, with above it a blind arch with tiles in the arch field (numbers 7;9), a stretch with rendered birth and closing stones (numbers 11;13), a stretcher arch with a rendered closing stone (numbers 15;17).
The REAR FACADE has per house in the extension of the front facade risalit a two-storey flat-roofed extension in which rectangular wall openings under blind segmental arches are set out (infills mostly altered). Between these extensions is a conservatory with balcony, whether or not in modernized condition.
