Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Residential block consisting of one GROUND FLOOR DWELLING with SHOP and two UPPER DWELLINGS. The shop, originally a bakery "De Hoop", is now in use as a gallery. In the back garden stands a detached former BAKERY. The residential block was built ca. 1900-1905 in neo-Renaissance style and is characterised by a cornice-topped facade with speckled courses and birth and closing stones in white plasterwork, relieving arches and stretches in various variations and a neo-Renaissance shop front.
The residential block is located in the southern part of the Sonsbeekkwartier near Graaf Ottoplein. This neighbourhood has a fork-shaped main structure oriented towards the central Graaf Ottoplein with short connecting streets and was filled in a short time with speculative building of two storeys. The urban design plan of Graaf Ottoplein and surroundings was executed according to the design of Ir J.W.C. TELLEGEN (1859-1921) who worked from 1887 to 1901 at Gemeentewerken Arnhem, first as chief supervisor and from 1890 as director. In that capacity he was (jointly) responsible for the redevelopment of the Klarendal district, the purchase of the Sonsbeek estate and the expansion plans Transvaalbuurt and Lombok. From 1901 to 1921 Tellegen was employed by the municipality of Amsterdam, first as director of the Building and Housing Inspection service and from 1915 as mayor.
The present object is situated in the continuous western facade wall of Verhuellstraat, the connecting street running in a northerly direction between Jacob Cremerstraat and St. Peterlaan. The residential block stands in the building line directly at the pavement.
Description
Partially cellared DWELLINGS with SHOP of two storeys and attic on rectangular ground plan with extensions at the rear. The brick facades are laid in Flemish bond. The two upper dwellings each have a gabled roof with a hipped end at the front. The roofs are covered with smothered Dutch tiles and the ridge is perpendicular to the front facade. In the front hipped sections non-original wooden roof dormers with roof lights have been placed.
The FRONT FACADE is divided horizontally by a grey painted plastered plinth, speckled courses of white plasterwork at the height of the sills, a rendered frieze with dentil moulding and diamond motif of red voussoir brick, a closing cornice. At the far left and right in the first storey are the narrow entrances to the upper dwellings: stone sill and jambs, worked panel door with inspection windows (wrought iron grilles at no. 23 disappeared), moulded cross-section, single-light fanlight and straight frame with imitation closing stone. Between these entrances the ground floor dwelling is situated. The shop front with integrated entrance is flanked by pilasters of red voussoir brick with quarter-hollow corner profiles and speckled courses, diamond heads and moulded capitals of white plasterwork. The front is closed off by a simple cornice and a lintel with the inscription: 'BAKKERY "de HOOP"'. The front consists of a large display window on the left and a shallow entrance vestibule on the right (stone step, sill and jambs, renewed glass door, moulded cross-section); both provided with a fanlight consisting of a series of segment-arch-shaped small panes with worked mullions. Below the display window is an arched provisioning cellar opening. To the right of the shop front are two rectangular windows with single-light sash windows and fanlights. These are closed off by blind segment arches with plastered birth and closing stones. The arch fields are filled with decorative brickwork. Beneath these windows are two two-light cellar lights which are closed off by blind segment arches.
The second storey has six rectangular windows with T-sash windows and fanlights. The windows are closed off by lintels and saddle stones with plastered closing stones (no. 23) and blind segment arches with plastered birth and closing stones (no. 27).
The first storey of the REAR FACADE is whitewashed and has in the left extension a four-light window with blocked fanlight; in the facade recess a double panel door with three-light fanlight and a w.c. window; in the right extension a large rectangular window with T-sash window and eight-light fanlight, on the garden side a large sliding door (small panes with coloured cathedral glass on the underside of the sliding doors and in the fanlights), a rectangular window (roof light and fanlight) and flanking entrance (new glass door). The layout of the upper dwellings was not clearly visible; originally probably rectangular windows with roof lights and fanlights under blind segment arches in the extensions and in the gable ends.
The detached former BAKERY in the back garden has one storey and attic floor on rectangular ground plan. The white-washed brick facades are laid partly in Flemish bond and partly in half-brick bond. The facades are provided with a plastered plinth, straight brick anchors and are closed off by a profiled wooden cornice. The gabled roof is covered with smothered Dutch tiles. In the left roof slope two large non-original wooden roof dormers have been placed. The FRONT FACADE has in the centre a panel door with two panes in a frame with rebates. This entrance is closed off by a blind segment arch. To the left of the entrance is a narrow arched six-light window. The attic floor has above the entrance a rectangular wall opening with a stained glass window (originally probably an attic hatch). The LEFT SIDE FACADE on the garden side has from left to right a rebated door opening and three arched windows with brick drip sills and fourteen-light steel frames. The RIGHT SIDE FACADE has three arched six-light steel frames. The REAR FACADE is blank.
Verhuellstraat 25 is a ground floor dwelling whose LAYOUT consists of a shop space and living room at the front, a corridor with on either side a room without windows (alcoves) in the middle, and at the rear a renewed kitchen, a garden room and a (former storage) room. The ground floor dwelling possesses a number of valuable INTERIOR ELEMENTS, such as a shop space with tile floor in geometric pattern (ochre, brown, red and black), a stucco ceiling with central rosette (leaf, foliate and arrow motifs); a living room with stucco ceiling (mouldings and central rosette with floral motifs) and simple wooden fireplace; in the corridor carved panel doors with moulded surrounds and one wide hinged door to the (storage) room; a cellar with two compartments, one with red tile floor and wooden ceiling, and one with brick floor, barrel vaults on iron beams and a provisioning hatch on the street side.
