Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Two-aisle RESIDENTIAL HOUSE, consisting of a GROUND-FLOOR DWELLING and an UPPER DWELLING. The residential house was built around 1900-1905 in neo-renaissance style and is characterised by a cornice-topped facade with side risalit, string courses and birth and closing stones in white plasterwork, relieving arches with ornamental brickwork in the arch fields and a semicircular portico containing two coupled front doors.
The residential house is located in the southern part of the Sonsbeekkwartier neighbourhood near Graaf Ottoplein. This neighbourhood has a fork-shaped main structure oriented towards Graaf Ottoplein with short connecting streets, and was rapidly filled in with speculative building of two storeys. The urban design plan of Graaf Ottoplein and surroundings was executed according to the design of ir J.W.C. TELLEGEN (1859-1921) who worked for Gemeentewerken Arnhem from 1887 to 1901, initially as chief supervisor and from 1890 as director. In that capacity he was (jointly) responsible for the redevelopment of the Klarendal neighbourhood, the acquisition of the Sonsbeek estate and the expansion plans for Transvaalbuurt and Lombok. From 1901 to 1921 Tellegen was employed by the municipality of Amsterdam, initially as director of the Building and Housing Inspection service and from 1915 as mayor.
The object under consideration is situated in the continuous western facade line of Verhuellstraat, the connecting street running in a northerly direction between Jacob Cremerstraat and St. Peterlaan. The residential house stands in the building line directly at the pavement.
Description
Partly cellared residential house of two storeys and attic on a rectangular ground plan with a two-storey flat-roofed extension at the rear. The brick facades are laid in cross bond. The gabled roof with the ridge perpendicular to the front facade has a half-hipped end at the front and is covered with swept Dutch tiles. In the front half-hip a non-original wooden roof dormer with hinged window has been installed.
The FRONT FACADE is articulated horizontally by a plinth and string courses of white plasterwork, a set-out frieze with sawtooth moulding and lattice pattern of red facing brick, a terminating cornice. The right-hand risalit has on the first storey a semicircular-ended portico with plastered corbel stones, blocks and closing stone. The portico has a hard stone floor and two coupled entrances: worked panel doors with viewing panels and wrought iron grilles (grilles at number 19 removed), profiled jambs and single-glazed fanlights. The entrances are separated from each other by a style executed as a pilaster with panels and simple list capital. Above the portico is a recessed rectangular field, and on the second storey a rectangular window with sash window and leaded glass fanlight. The window is closed off by a blind semicircular arch with plastered stones. The arch field is filled with ornamental brickwork of red (facing) brick. To the left of the risalit are two window axes with in the plinth two rectangular cellar lights under blind segmental arches; on the first storey two rectangular windows with T-sash windows and fanlights; on the second storey two rectangular windows with sash windows and leaded glass fanlights. The windows on the first and second storeys are closed off by blind semicircular arches with plastered stones. The arch fields are filled with ornamental brickwork of red (facing) brick. At the far left a narrow back alley has been incorporated into the residential house, which closes off at the street side with a wrought iron swing gate under an arched reveal with plastered closing stone.
