Inleiding
HERENHUIS, ca. 1900 gebouwd in neorenaissance-stijl. Het pand staat op de noordoostelijke hoek van de Thorbeckestraat en de Emmastraat en is gesitueerd in de zichtas van de Boulevard Heuvelink tegenover een verbreding van de boulevard in de vorm van een driehoekig plantsoen. Het Boulevardkwartier is in het laatste kwart van de negentiende eeuw grotendeels bebouwd met herenhuizen in historiserende bouwstijlen.
Het aangebouwde rouwcentrum aan de rechter zijde valt niet onder de bescherming.
Omschrijving
Deels onderkelderd HERENHUIS van twee bouwlagen en zolderverdieping op rechthoekig grondplan. Het afgeplatte schilddak is belegd met gesmoorde platte Friese pannen. In de dakschilden boven de voor- en zijgevels zijn elk één houten dakkapel geplaatst. De dakkapellen hebben platte daken en vierruits stolpramen. De exemplaren aan de voor- en linker zijde zijn voorzien van bewerkte vleugelstukken. De geprofileerde gootlijst van de dakkapel aan de voorzijde wordt bekroond door een fronton. In het dakschild aan de achterzijde is een schoorsteen geplaatst.
De bakstenen gevels zijn in kruisverband gemetseld. De voorgevel en de linker zijgevel (aan de Emmastraat) worden horizontaal geleed door een hardstenen plint, geprofileerde gestucte waterlijsten ter hoogte van de lekdorpels, een geprofileerde cordonlijst tussen de eerste en tweede bouwlaag, gepleisterde speklagen ter hoogte van de tussen- en bovendorpels, en een hoofdgestel bestaande uit een geprofileerde lijst, vlak fries en geprofileerde kroonlijst. De VOORGEVEL is vijf vensterassen breed en asymmetrisch ingedeeld. De ingang bevindt zich in de tweede travee van rechts en bestaat uit een paneeldeur met twee ruitjes en roosters onder een enkelruits bovenlicht. De vensters in de eerste bouwlaag bestaan uit enkelruits schuiframen en enkelruits bovenlichten. De muuropeningen in de eerste bouwlaag worden afgesloten door kroonlijstjes en getoogde hanekammen met gestucte geboorte- en sluitstenen. Onder het venster van de rechter travee bevindt zich een koekoek met een tweeruits getoogd stolpraam. De vensters in de tweede bouwlaag bestaan uit T-schuiframen en enkelruits bovenlichten. Deze muuropeningen worden afgesloten door rondbogen met gestucte geboorte- en sluitstenen. De boogtrommels zijn voorzien van gekleurd metselmozaïek. Onder de vensteropeningen in de eerste en tweede bouwlaag zijn tegeltableaus aangebracht met geometrische en gestileerde bloemmotieven. Alle vensters in de voorgevel zijn voorzien van persiennes.
De LINKER ZIJGEVEL is twee vensterassen breed. De venstertypes en de ontlastingsbogen corresponderen met die van de voorgevel. De vensters hebben geen persiennes.
De wit gepleisterde RECHTER ZIJGEVEL heeft tegen de eerste bouwlaag een uitbouw (rouwcentrum) die niet onder de bescherming valt (oorspronkelijk bevond zich hier een serre). In de tweede bouwlaag bevindt zich een dubbele balkondeur en een smal rechthoekig venster, beide met bovenlicht. De ACHTERGEVEL is ingebouwd.
Het INTERIEUR bezit een groot aantal authentieke elementen, zoals een hal met wit marmeren vloer en een trappenhuis met houten trap, bewerkte trappaal, ijzeren spijlen en geprofileerde handlijst; een kelder met troggewelven op ijzeren liggers; een woonkamer met zwart marmeren schouw en stucplafonds (cartouche met voluten, florale- en schelpmotieven).

- Van architectuurhistorische waarde als goed en grotendeels gaaf voorbeeld in in- en exterieur van een herenhuis in neorenaissance-stijl. Het pand valt op door hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten zoals bijzonder materiaalgebruik en rijke ornamentiek (o.a. metselmozaïek en tegeltableaus) en bevat waardevolle interieurelementen (o.a. stucplafonds).

MANSION, built circa 1900 in neo-Renaissance style. The building stands on the northeastern corner of Thorbeckestraat and Emmastraat and is situated in the visual axis of Boulevard Heuvelink opposite a widening of the boulevard in the form of a triangular green space. The Boulevard quarter was largely built up in the last quarter of the nineteenth century with mansions in historicising architectural styles.
The adjoining funeral home on the right side is not protected.
Description
Partially basememented MANSION of two storeys and attic storey on rectangular ground plan. The hipped roof is covered with dampened flat Frisian tiles. In the roof sections above the front and side facades there is each one wooden dormer placed. The dormers have flat roofs and four-pane attic windows. The specimens on the front and left side are provided with worked wing pieces. The profiled gutter moulding of the dormer on the front facade is crowned by a pediment. In the roof section on the rear side a chimney is placed.
The brick facades are laid in cross-bond. The front facade and the left side facade (on Emmastraat) are horizontally articulated by a hard stone plinth, profiled stuccoed drip mouldings at the height of the eaves gutters, a profiled string course between the first and second storey, plastered bed courses at the height of the intermediate and upper eaves gutters, and a main cornice consisting of a profiled moulding, plain frieze and profiled cornice. The FRONT FACADE is five window bays wide and asymmetrically arranged. The entrance is located in the second bay from the right and consists of a panelled door with two panes and grilles under a single-pane fanlight. The windows in the first storey consist of single-pane sash windows and single-pane fanlights. The wall openings in the first storey are closed by cornicelets and arched crow-steps with stuccoed springers and keystones. Below the window of the right bay there is a cuckoo opening with a two-pane arched attic window. The windows in the second storey consist of T-sash windows and single-pane fanlights. These wall openings are closed by arch curves with stuccoed springers and keystones. The arch rings are provided with coloured brick mosaic. Below the window openings in the first and second storey tile panels are applied with geometric and stylised floral motifs. All windows in the front facade are provided with blinds.
The LEFT SIDE FACADE is two window bays wide. The window types and the relieving arches correspond with those of the front facade. The windows have no blinds.
The white plastered RIGHT SIDE FACADE has against the first storey an outbuilding (funeral home) which is not protected (originally a conservatory was located here). In the second storey there is a double balcony door and a narrow rectangular window, both with fanlight. The REAR FACADE is built-in.
The INTERIOR possesses a large number of authentic elements, such as a hall with white marble floor and a stairwell with wooden staircase, worked newel post, iron balusters and profiled handrail; a basement with barrel vaults on iron beams; a living room with black marble fireplace and stucco ceilings (cartouche with volutes, floral and shell motifs).
