Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The elongated concrete bridge "Eldense Dijk", situated on the southern bank of the Nederrijn, is of the type CULVERT BRIDGE with metal sluice gates on the east side. This bridge in Arnhem-Zuid (Meinerswijk) was probably built between 1920 and 1940 and is used mainly for car and bicycle traffic.
The area Meinerswijk lies in a bend in the aforementioned river and is one of the oldest inhabited places of Arnhem. It contains, among other things, the foundations of a Roman military camp, Castra Herculis, and remains of medieval settlements. The history of the Eldense Dijk goes back to the eighteenth century when the Griftdijk ran along the Meinerswijk polder, of which the northernmost part was called Eldense dijk or Eldense weg. This dike was the most important land connection between Arnhem and Nijmegen. Due to frequent flooding, Meinerswijk increasingly became an overflow area. In 1752 the Eldensedijk was renewed, raised and provided with a culvert bridge (predecessor of the current bridge). This secured the land connection with Nijmegen, but Meinerswijk was now definitively an overflow area.
The lakes in the Meinerswijk are the result of clay extraction that took place here in the twenties of this century. Of the originally three brick factories, only brick factory "Elden" remains (no longer in use).
Nowadays Meinerswijk is a nature reserve with an "Uiterwaardenpark".
The Eldense dijk is situated on the east side of the polder Meinerswijk and runs parallel to the Eldenseweg located to the west (approach road to the Nelson Mandela bridge over the Nederrijn).
Description
Elongated concrete CULVERT BRIDGE, consisting of a horizontal deck (beam floor) spanning multiple portals. The portals each consist of five columns and have stepped cantilevers on the sides at the height of the cross-beams. Between the portals, metal sluice gates are fitted on the east side of the culvert bridge.
The ABUTMENTS consist of a straight front wall and straight wing walls of concrete in the direction of the bridge.
The flat DECK, provided with a footpath on both sides, is entirely covered with asphalt. The footpath on the east side is provided with metal covers under which the metal sluice gates are located. The RAILING on both sides of the bridge is formed by three horizontal metal tubes running along the length of the bridge. At the height of the portals there are on the bridge two pairs each of low, rectangular railing posts through which the tubes of the railing pass.
Valuation
CULVERT BRIDGE the Eldense Dijk.
- Of architectural historical value as a functional and typologically good example of a culvert bridge situated in the floodplains from the first half of this century. Characteristic of the time of construction are the execution in concrete and the construction method with stepped cantilevers on the sides of the portals. Bridges executed in concrete become increasingly common in the Netherlands from the twenties onwards.
- Of historical value because the Eldense dijk was already in the 18th century the most important land connection between Arnhem and Nijmegen and was important for the water management of the Meinerswijk area (early settlement site, brick production from the last quarter of the nineteenth century).
- Urban planning value as an essential component of the historically developed landscape concept of the polder Meinerswijk (overflow area). The bridge has a functional relationship with the pedestrian culvert bridge located to the west between the Drielsedijk and the Meginhardweg.
