Inleiding
Voormalig PAKHUIS, thans café Verheyden, uit ca. 1900-1910 met elementen in Art Nouveau-stijl. Het pand is gelegen op de zuidwestelijke hoek van de Wezenstraat en de Heijdendaalsteeg en is aan beide zijden ingebouwd. De Wezenstraat is een smalle straat met een rechte hoek, omstreeks 1850 aangelegd op het voormalige terrein van het Burgerweeshuis en hoofdzakelijk bebouwd met bedrijfspanden.
Omschrijving
Voormalig PAKHUIS van vier in hoogte afnemende bouwlagen met nagenoeg plat dak op rechthoekig grondplan. De bakstenen gevels zijn in kruisverband gemetseld met geknipte voegen. De trasraam wordt afgesloten door een hardstenen band.
De VOORGEVEL (aan de Wezenstraat) is vier traveeën breed en heeft een geleding van lisenen waarop smeedijzeren sierankers in Art Nouveau-stijl zijn aangebracht. De ingang in de eerste bouwlaag bevindt zich in de tweede travee van rechts en bestaat uit een opgeklampte deur (met diagonale schroten), geprofileerd kalf en zesruits bovenlicht. Aan weerszijden van de ingang een venster met roedenverdeling en luiken met diagonaal geplaatste kraalschroten in de panelen. De linker travee heeft een afgeronde hoek met kraagsteen en een vierruits draairaampje. In de ingangstravee bevindt zich op elke verdieping een balkon met dubbele opgeklampte deuren (diagonaal geplaatste kraalschroten in de panelen en 2-ruits raampjes bovenin). De ijzeren balkonondersteuningen worden geschoord door geprofileerde natuurstenen kraagsteentjes. De smeedijzeren hekwerken aan de zijden van de balkons zijn uitgevoerd in eenvoudige Art Nouveau-stijl. De openingen aan de voorzijde van de balkons zijn afgezet met planken. In de daklijst is een hijsbalk aangebracht. De recht gesloten vensters in de overige traveeën (negen stuks) bestaan uit twaalfruits stolpramen. Alle muuropeningen worden afgesloten door rechte strekken en hebben bakstenen lekdorpels aan de onderzijde. De voorgevel wordt beëindigd door een geprofileerde kroonlijst.
De twee traveeën brede LINKER ZIJGEVEL (aan de Heijdendaalsteeg) heeft rechte muurankers, vier zesruits vensters in de eerste bouwlaag en twee twaalfruits stolpramen op elke verdieping. De overige gevels zijn ingebouwd.
Het INTERIEUR bezit onder meer balklaag-plafonds met ijzeren I-profiel onderslagbalken, een trappenhuis naar de tweede bouwlaag en rechte houten steektrappen tegen de achtergevel naar de bovenliggende verdiepingen, een kelder met troggewelven op ijzeren liggers.
Waardering
Voormalig PAKHUIS uit ca. 1900-1910.

Description
Former WAREHOUSE of four storeys decreasing in height with nearly flat roof on a rectangular ground plan. The brick facades are built in Flemish bond with struck joints. The stucco band is closed by a hardstone band.
The FRONT FACADE (on the Wezenstraat) is four bays wide and has a division of pilaster strips on which wrought iron ornamental wall anchors in Art Nouveau style are attached. The entrance on the first storey is located in the second bay from the right and consists of a clamped door (with diagonal boards), profiled soffit and six-pane fanlight. On either side of the entrance a window with glazing bars and shutters with diagonally placed bead boards in the panels. The left bay has a rounded corner with corbel and a four-pane casement window. In the entrance bay there is on each storey a balcony with double clamped doors (diagonally placed bead boards in the panels and 2-pane windows at the top). The iron balcony supports are braced by profiled natural stone corbels. The wrought iron railings on the sides of the balconies are executed in simple Art Nouveau style. The openings at the front of the balconies are closed off with boards. A hoist beam is built into the cornice. The closed rectangular windows in the remaining bays (nine in total) consist of twelve-pane sash windows. All wall openings are closed by straight stretches and have brick drip edges at the base. The front facade is terminated by a profiled cornice.
The two bays wide LEFT SIDE FACADE (on the Heijdendaalsteeg) has straight wall anchors, four six-pane windows on the first storey and two twelve-pane sash windows on each storey. The remaining facades are built up.
The INTERIOR has among other features floor slab ceilings with iron I-profile bearing beams, a stairwell to the second storey and straight wooden step ladders against the rear facade to the upper storeys, a cellar with barrel vaults on iron beams.
