Inleiding

Description
Introduction
SCHOOLBUILDING with OUTBUILDING for primary education, built in 1886-1887 as R.K. Sint Aloysius School and now in use as a Dance Academy of the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Arnhem. The school was built on commission of the R.K. institution "Insula Dei" in a mixed architectural style with influences from the neo-Renaissance and neo-Gothic. The architect is unknown. Remarkable is the affinity in layout and detailing with the former Catholic M.U.L.O. for girls from 1922 on the Eusebiusbuitensingel, also by "Insula Dei".
The building is situated in the continuous western façade wall of the Weverstraat and has (as does the neighbouring building on the right-hand side) a building line set back several metres in relation to the other buildings in the façade wall. The front courtyard has modern paving and is partially built upon with a coffee house.
Description
Basement SCHOOLBUILDING of two storeys and an attic storey on a rectangular ground plan. The attic storey of the front section has a gabled roof with an adjoining gabled roof at the front (ridge parallel to the front façade). The roof is tiled on the street side with slates in Maas bond and on the rear side with covered Dutch tiles. In the roof section at the front three wooden roof dormers are placed. The roof dormers consist of a four-pane casement window, a small gabled roof with slates and a projecting two-sided spire with a finial at the front. The brick façades are laid in Flemish bond with struck joints and provided with ornamental wrought-iron wall anchors. The asymmetrically arranged FRONT FAÇADE is five bays wide. The horizontal articulation consists of brick drip mouldings below the two-part brick eaves boards; sandstone courses at the level of the eaves boards; brick moulding and flat frieze below the wooden gutter on corbels. The windows consist of steel twelve-pane pivot sashes with multi-pane fanlights and topped with a stone lintel and blind segmental arch with sandstone keystone. The reveals and the segmental arches have a quarter-round corner profile. The left two bays project slightly and are topped by a stepped gable with sandstone coping and a diagonally placed pinnacle at the top. In the left bay of the first storey there is a segmental arch-shaped closed portico (double panel door with two panes each and two wrought-iron grilles below a curved three-pane fanlight). Above the windows of the second storey is a sandstone block set in with the inscription: "ST. ALOYSIUSSCHOOL". Above this block is in the top gable a sixteen-pane pivot sash below blind segmental arch. The REAR FAÇADE is six window bays wide. The left half is single-storey with balcony and brick open-worked balustrade. The right half is two-storey and is topped by a wooden cornice. The windows consist of twelve-pane steel pivot sashes and multi-pane fanlights, brick eaves boards, stone lintel and closing roll moulding. The two-storey OUTBUILDING on a rectangular ground plan at the back left of the plot is connected to the left side façade of the main building by a two-storey, flat-roofed connector. The connector has in the obliquely positioned rear façade a high segmental arch-shaped opening in the first storey (Access to former playground) and in the second storey a segmental arch-shaped composite window. The brick façades of the outbuilding are laid in Flemish bond and are topped by a moulded cornice. The gently pitched gabled roof with ridge perpendicular to the street was added later. The long north and south façades are six window bays wide. The north façade (at the school courtyard) is articulated by tapering pilaster strips and topped by three projecting roll mouldings on which a simple brick gutter. The first and second storeys are provided with large segmental arch-shaped multi-pane windows (subdivision: two coupled pivot sashes at the base, high multi-pane fanlights with fixed transom and centre mullion). The south façade has small six-pane segmental arch-shaped windows placed high in the storeys (bricked up in the first storey). The west façade has a new extension against the first storey and two small panes in the second storey. The LAYOUT of the main building consists of an L-shaped hall with stairwell in the corner, in the first storey one classroom at the front and two at the rear and in the second storey two rooms at the front and one at the rear. The INTERIOR possesses among other things tiled wainscots (yellow flecked tiles with closing black tile border), terrazzo floors, panel doors with nine panes and surrounds (stiles passing through the cornice) in the vestibule and hall; a stairwell with stone step stairs, wrought-iron railings with turned spindles and moulded wooden handrails; rectangular classrooms with fixed three-door wall cupboards.
Valuation
SCHOOLBUILDING FROM 1886-1887, with OUTBUILDING,
- Of architectural historical value as a fine and intact example of a schoolbuilding in a mixed architectural style with elements of neo-Renaissance and neo-Gothic (particularly in exterior), in combination with characteristic interior elements from the first quarter of the twentieth century. The school stands out for high-quality aesthetic qualities, in both interior and exterior, such as the rich use of materials and special ornamentation. The object gives an intact image of the late nineteenth-century school and possesses special interior components. As such, the object is important because of architectural integrity and recognizability as a school.
- Of urban planning value as part of the historically grown, small-scale structure of the Arnhem city centre, in which the building plays a visually distinctive role because of its characteristic appearance and its setting in the façade wall with a considerable setback building line. The object has ensemble value in relation to the likewise set-back building on the right-hand side (Weverstraat 40;40a).
- Of cultural historical value because of the recognizability in both interior and exterior of the function as a Roman Catholic school, which is linked to the cultural development of Arnhem.
