Inleiding
Voormalig BANKGEBOUW van de Arnhemsche Bank met HEK, na 1907 het onderkomen van de Arnhemsche Verzekeringsmaatschappij en thans in gebruik als Dansacademie van de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Arnhem. Het pand is gebouwd in het eerste decennium van de twintigste eeuw in overgangsarchitectuur met elementen van de Art Nouveau en het rationalisme.
Het pand is gelegen in de westelijke gevelwand van de Weverstraat en heeft (evenals het buurpand nummer 39) een enkele meters terugwijkende rooilijn ten opzichte van de overige panden in de aaneengesloten gevelwand. Het voorplein is aan de straatzijde afgezet met een hoog hek in Art Nouveau-stijl. Het smeedijzeren HEK is geplaatst tussen hoge bakstenen pijlers met geprofileerde hardstenen dekplaten en op een bakstenen plint met uitgemetseld trasraam en hardstenen deklijst. De hekken buigen op de hoeken naar binnen. De smeedijzeren poort is verwijderd.
Omschrijving
Onderkelderd pand van twee hoge bouwlagen en een zolderverdieping op onregelmatig grondplan. Het voorhuis heeft een zadeldak met de nok evenwijdig aan de voorgevel, ingeklemd tussen afgeknotte trapgevels. Het dak wordt onderbroken door een hoger opgetrokken travee. De dakschilden zijn belegd met rode kruispannen. De bakstenen gevels zijn in kruisverband gemetseld en worden afgesloten door een houten goot op klossen.
De asymmetrisch ingedeelde VOORGEVEL is zes traveeën breed. De rechter twee traveeën plus de flankerende ingangspartij risaleren licht. De linker travee en de tweede travee van rechts steken door de gootlijst heen en worden bekroond door opengewerkte bakstenen balustrade met hoger opgetrokken hoekpenanten, voorzien van geprofileerde hardstenen dekplaten en blokken. Voorts is de linker travee in de eerste bouwlaag uitgebouwd met een kwartrond ingangsportiek, dat aansluit op de voorgevel van het belendende pand. De bakstenen voorgevel is voorzien van een tweedelige hardstenen plint, smeedijzeren sierankers in Art Nouveau-stijl en een afsluitende houten goot op bewerkte zandstenen consoles eveneens in Art Nouveau-stijl. De regenpijpen hebben metalen vergaarbakken. De ingangspartij in de vierde travee bestaat uit: een hardstenen trap (drie treden en bomen), dorpel en hoekblokken met groeven in Art Nouveau-stijl; een dubbele paneeldeur met bewerkte stijlen en naald, smeedijzeren beslag en twee ruitjes met smeedijzeren roosters; geprofileerd kalf en achtruits bovenlicht met afgeschuinde hoeken onder ijzeren latei; een ijzeren luifel met lessenaardak, rustend op twee sierlijke smeedijzeren ondersteuningen in Art Nouveau-stijl (geplaatst op de trapbomen); boven de luifel een groot hoefijzerboogvormig zevenruits bovenlicht met omlijsting van zandstenen blokken. De ingangspartij wordt bekroond door een balkon met gesloten balustrade. De balustrade is voorzien van een natuurstenen waterspuwer (in de vorm van een kikker), geprofileerde afdeklijsten en vogel met monogram-schild op de hoekpenant. Aan weerszijden van de ingang bevindt zich een groot samengesteld venster, bestaande uit: drie enkelruits schuiframen en zesruits bovenlichten, hardstenen lekdorpel en kraagsteentjes, twee bewerkte zandstenen middenstijlen en afsluitende ijzeren èn zandstenen latei onder drie ingemetselde segmentboogjes. De kwartronde ingangspartij in de linker travee bestaat uit: een gebogen hardstenen trap (drie treden en bomen); een paneeldeur met bewerkte stijlen, smeedijzeren beslag en ruitjes met smeedijzeren rooster; een bovenlicht en zijlichten met bovenlichten; tot hardstenen lekdorpels opgetrokken hardstenen plint met vakken waarin krulmotief in Art Nouveau-stijl; geprofileerd zandstenen kalf en latei. Dit kwartronde portiek wordt bekroond door een balkon met hardstenen balustrade tussen bakstenen penanten.
De linker travee heeft op de verdiepingen vier trapsgewijs geplaatste smalle tweeruits vensters. De lateien van de vensters in de tweede bouwlaag zijn voorzien van voluten. De tweede bouwlaag heeft in de tweede tot en met de vijfde travee een enkelruits schuifvenster en achtruits bovenlicht met natuurstenen lekdorpel, latei en blokken ter hoogte van de dorpels; in de zesde travee twee gekoppelde enkelruits schuifvensters en zesruits bovenlichten met bewerkte zandstenen middenstijl en twee gekoppelde blinde segmentboogjes boven de latei. De vijfde travee heeft in de zolderverdieping drie gekoppelde drieruits vensters met natuurstenen lekdorpel, middenstijlen en latei.
Een ten opzichte van de voorgevel teruggelegen muurtje met paneeldeur verschaft toegang tot een zij-ingang in de (tweemaal terugspringende) RECHTER ZIJGEVEL. Het voorste geveldeel heeft over de volle hoogte een uitgemetselde schoorsteen met links daarvan in de eerste bouwlaag een groot samengesteld venster met twee zandstenen middenstijlen en rechts daarvan enkele drieruits vensters onder blinde segmentbogen. Het geveldeel na de eerste terugsprong heeft een ingang in de eerste bouwlaag (hardstenen trapje, dorpel en neuten; een paneeldeur met drie ruitjes en een drieruits bovenlicht onder blinde segmentboog) en een gekoppeld draairaam met tweeruits bovenlichten onder blinde segmentbogen in de tweede en derde bouwlaag. De LINKER ZIJGEVEL is blind en voorzien van drie uitgemetselde schoorstenen.
De ACHTERGEVEL. Het achterhuis bestaat uit drie plat gedekte bouwvolumes: een éénlaags ver vooruitspringend bouwdeel tussen hoge bouwvolumes. Het souterrain heeft voor elk bouwdeel een grote lichtkooi, afgezet met een smeedijzeren hek op hardstenen plint. De vensters van het souterrain hebben hardstenen lekdorpels en ijzeren lateien. De drie bouwdelen hebben elk een groot stalen zesruits venster onder ijzeren latei in de eerste bouwlaag. Het linker bouwdeel heeft in de tweede en derde bouwlaag elk twee stolpramen met meerruits bovenlichten onder blinde segmentbogen. Het rechter bouwdeel heeft in de tweede bouwlaag twee identieke vensters.
Het INTERIEUR bezit waardevolle elementen, zoals een tochtportaal met terrazzo-vloeren, marmeren lambrizering en stucplafond; links-achter een natuurstenen bordestrap met smeedijzeren leuning naar het souterrain; rechts bij de zij-ingang een houten bordestrap met houten leuning en bewerkte trappalen; een souterrain met terrazzo-vloer, troggewelven op ijzeren liggers, een kluis en een goederenlift. Opmerkelijk is de overkapping (op de verdieping) van de centrale hal: drie smeedijzeren sikkelspanten met verticalen en elkaar kruisende diagonalen (twee spanten in de breedte en één in de lengte) op bewerkte kraagstenen in Art Nouveau-stijl ondersteunen een omgaand dakschild (bewerkte stijlen en klossen) en een centrale glazen kap. De sikkelspanten zijn voorzien van gestileerde bloemmotieven en spiralen.

Former BANK BUILDING of the Arnhemsche Bank with FENCE, after 1907 the premises of the Arnhemsche Verzekeringsmaatschappij and currently in use as Dance Academy of the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Arnhem. The building was constructed in the first decade of the twentieth century in transitional architecture with elements of Art Nouveau and rationalism.
The building is located in the western facade wall of the Weverstraat and has (like the adjacent building number 39) a setback building line several metres back compared to the remaining buildings in the continuous facade wall. The forecourt is bounded at the street side with a high fence in Art Nouveau style. The wrought iron FENCE is placed between high brick pillars with profiled sandstone capping plates and on a brick plinth with rendered travertine frame and sandstone coping. The fences curve inward at the corners. The wrought iron gate has been removed.
Description
Basement building of two high storeys and an attic storey on irregular ground plan. The front house has a gabled roof with the ridge parallel to the front facade, wedged between truncated stepped gables. The roof is interrupted by a higher raised bay. The roof tiles are covered with red plain tiles. The brick facades are laid in cross bond and are finished with a wooden gutter on consoles.
The asymmetrically arranged FRONT FACADE is six bays wide. The right two bays plus the flanking entrance section project slightly. The left bay and the second bay from the right project through the gutter line and are crowned by openwork brick balustrade with higher raised corner pilasters, fitted with profiled sandstone capping plates and blocks. Furthermore, the left bay on the first storey is extended with a quarter-round entrance portico, which adjoins the front facade of the adjacent building. The brick front facade is provided with a two-part sandstone plinth, wrought iron ornamental wall anchors in Art Nouveau style and a closing wooden gutter on worked sandstone consoles also in Art Nouveau style. The rainwater pipes have metal collection boxes. The entrance section in the fourth bay consists of: a sandstone staircase (three treads and newels), threshold and corner blocks with grooves in Art Nouveau style; a double panel door with worked stiles and cross bar, wrought iron fittings and two panes with wrought iron grilles; profiled calf and rear-light fanlight with bevelled corners under iron lintel; an iron canopy with lean-to roof, resting on two ornate wrought iron supports in Art Nouveau style (placed on the stair newels); above the canopy a large horseshoe-arch-shaped seven-pane fanlight with frame of sandstone blocks. The entrance section is crowned by a balcony with closed balustrade. The balustrade is provided with a natural stone waterspout (in the form of a frog), profiled coping and bird with monogram-shield on the corner pilaster. On either side of the entrance is a large composite window, consisting of: three single-pane sash windows and six-pane fanlights, sandstone lekdorpel and corbels, two worked sandstone mullions and closing iron and sandstone lintel under three inset segmental arches. The quarter-round entrance section in the left bay consists of: a curved sandstone staircase (three treads and newels); a panel door with worked stiles, wrought iron fittings and panes with wrought iron grille; a fanlight and side lights with fanlights; sandstone plinth drawn up to sandstone lekdorpels with panels in which scroll motif in Art Nouveau style; profiled sandstone calf and lintel. This quarter-round portico is crowned by a balcony with sandstone balustrade between brick pilasters.
The left bay has on the storeys four stepped-wise placed narrow two-pane windows. The lintels of the windows on the second storey are provided with scrolls. The second storey has in the second through to the fifth bay a single-pane sash window and four-pane fanlight with natural stone lekdorpel, lintel and blocks at the height of the thresholds; in the sixth bay two coupled single-pane sash windows and six-pane fanlights with worked sandstone mullion and two coupled blind segmental arches above the lintel. The fifth bay has on the attic storey three coupled three-pane windows with natural stone lekdorpel, mullions and lintel.
A wall set back in relation to the front facade with panel door provides access to a side entrance in the (twice set-back) RIGHT SIDE FACADE. The foremost facade section has over its full height an embedded chimney with to its left on the first storey a large composite window with two sandstone mullions and to its right some three-pane windows under blind segmental arches. The facade section after the first setback has an entrance on the first storey (sandstone steps, threshold and lug; a panel door with three panes and a three-pane fanlight under blind segmental arch) and a coupled casement window with two-pane fanlights under blind segmental arches on the second and third storey. The LEFT SIDE FACADE is blind and provided with three embedded chimneys.
The REAR FACADE. The rear house consists of three flat-roofed building volumes: a single-storey far projecting building section between high building volumes. The basement has for each building section a large light well, bounded with a wrought iron fence on sandstone plinth. The windows of the basement have sandstone lekdorpels and iron lintels. The three building sections each have a large steel six-pane window under iron lintel on the first storey. The left building section has on the second and third storey each two pivot windows with multi-pane fanlights under blind segmental arches. The right building section has on the second storey two identical windows.
The INTERIOR possesses valuable elements, such as a draught lobby with terrazzo floors, marble wainscoting and stucco ceiling; rear left a natural stone staircase with wrought iron railing to the basement; right at the side entrance a wooden staircase with wooden railing and worked stair balusters; a basement with terrazzo floor, barrel vaults on iron beams, a safe and a goods lift. Remarkable is the canopy (on the storey) of the central hall: three wrought iron curved trusses with verticals and crossing diagonals (two trusses in width and one in length) on worked corbels in Art Nouveau style support a surrounding roof section (worked stiles and consoles) and a central glass canopy. The curved trusses are provided with stylised flower motifs and spirals.
