Omschrijving
SCHOOLGEBOUW van twee bouwlagen en zolder op T-vormig grondplan. Het gebouw maakt een breed front naar de Statenlaan. In het midden - op de kruising - bevindt zich de hoofdingang die wordt gemarkeerd door een hoog opgaande topgevelrisaliet. In de tweelaags vleugels achter en rechts van de ingang zijn de leslokalen ondergebracht. In de linker vleugel (één hoge bouwlaag met zadeldak) bevindt zich de gymzaal. De nieuwbouw aan de achterzijde komt niet voor bescherming in aanmerking. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in grijze gevelklinkers en gemetseld in Noors verband met verdiepte voegen. De plint bestaat uit ruw behakte blokken basaltlava. De lekdorpels van de vensters zijn uitgevoerd in zandsteen. De daken van de in hoogte en breedte variërende bouwdelen zijn belegd met gesmoorde opnieuw verbeterde pannen. De bakgoten zijn uitgevoerd in gewapend beton.
In het midden van de asymmetrisch ingedeelde voorgevel bevindt zich de HOOFDENTREE: een portiek met natuurstenen plint, vensterstrook en aangekapt lessenaardak leidt naar een bronzen dubbele glasdeur in de linker zijde van de hoog opgaande topgevelrisaliet. In de portiek is een steen ingemetseld met het opschrift: "De eerste steen gelegd door B. Bakker wethouder van onderwijs 4 september 1939". Boven de portiek is het letterornament "~GYMNASIUM" aangebracht. De flankerende risaliet rechts heeft aan de voorzijde een over twee verdiepingen doorgaand meerruits venster en in de topgevel een zesruits rond zolderlicht. De risaliet wordt afgesloten door een aangekapt zadeldak. Het teruggelegen en iets lagere bouwdeel links van de ingang heeft aan de voorzijde een hoog trappenhuisvenster. Hierop sluit een éénlaags tussenlid aan, dat de overgang vormt naar de LINKER VLEUGEL; de gymnastiekzaal. Het betreft een rechthoekig bouwdeel van één hoge bouwlaag en zadeldak. De voor- en achtergevel van deze vleugel zijn vijf vensterassen breed, waarin samengestelde ramen (gekoppelde openslaande ramen onder en gekoppelde kantelramen boven). Aan de achterzijde zijn onder deze vensters enkele dubbele ijzeren deuren aangebracht, die openen naar de speelplaats. Tegen de linker zijgevel is een lagere aanbouw geplaatst waarin een dubbele ijzeren deur en een reeks vierkante vensters.
De RECHTER VLEUGEL heeft aan de voorzijde in zowel de eerste als de tweede bouwlaag een vensterstrook van elk negen samengestelde vensters per leslokaal. De indeling van deze leslokaalvensters bestaat uit openslaande ramen aan de onderzijde, vaste middengedeeltes en kantelramen boven. De leslokalen op het uiteinde van de rechter vleugel hebben elk een vensterstrook van vijf samengestelde ramen in de rechter zijgevel. De achtergevel van de rechter vleugel (gangzijde) heeft in de eerste bouwlaag een dubbele ijzeren deur tussen twee rechthoekige vensters, en daarboven in de tweede bouwlaag drie dito vensters. De ACHTERVLEUGEL heeft leslokalen aan weerszijden van een gang. De zijgevels hebben in beide bouwlagen vier grote vierdelige vensters, waarvan de indeling bestaat uit openslaande ramen aan de onderzijde, vaste middengedeeltes en kantelramen boven. De nieuwbouw tegen de achtergevel komt niet voor bescherming in aanmerking. Boven deze aanbouw steekt een topgevelrisaliet uit (in het verlengde van de gang) met een zesruits rond zolderlicht. Waarschijnlijk bezat deze risaliet oorspronkelijk een over twee bouwlagen doorgaand venster zoals in de risaliet aan de voorzijde.
In de school zijn een groot aantal oorspronkelijke INTERIEURELEMENTEN bewaard gebleven, zoals de indeling met centrale hal en flankerend trappenhuis van waaruit gangen lopen door de achter- en rechtervleugel met leslokalen; grijs en wit gemêleerde tegelvloeren; tot ca. 1,5 meter betegelde wanden van lichtgele tegels met zeer dunne stootvoegen; kapstokken van chromen buizen waaraan jashaken; trappenhuis met natuurstenen bordestrap met ijzeren leuning (sierlijk gebogen stijlen) waarop chromen buis (handlijst); docentenkamer met oorspronkelijk eikehouten meubilair; dubbele deuren van ijzer met buishandgrepen in gangen en hal.

- Van architectuurhistorische waarde als goed en grotendeels gaaf voorbeeld van een schoolgebouw in interbellum-architectuur, ontworpen door de dienst Gemeentewerken Arnhem (projectarchitect J. van Biesen). Kenmerkend voor deze sobere baksteen-bouwtrant zijn het kettingverband en het verdiepte voegwerk, de met pannen gedekte zadeldaken en de relatief grote raampartijen met ijzeren onderverdelingen. Voorts bezit de school een vrij gaaf interieur met een groot aantal oorspronkelijke elementen, zoals trappenhuis, kapstokken van chromen buizen en docentenkamer-meubilair.
- Van stedebouwkundige waarde als essentieel onderdeel van een schoolcomplex, dat cultuurhistorisch, architectuurhistorisch en stedebouwkundig van grote betekenis is voor Arnhem. SCHOOLBUILDING of two storeys and attic on T-shaped ground plan. The building presents a broad front onto the Statenlaan. In the centre - at the crossing - is located the main entrance which is marked by a high-rising gabled risalit. In the two-storey wings behind and to the right of the entrance are housed the classrooms. In the left wing (one high storey with gabled roof) is located the gymnasium. The new construction at the rear is not eligible for protection. The facades are constructed in grey facing bricks and laid in Norwegian bond with recessed joints. The plinth consists of roughly hewn blocks of basalt lava. The window sills are executed in sandstone. The roofs of the building elements varying in height and width are covered with dampened newly improved tiles. The rain gutters are executed in reinforced concrete.
In the centre of the asymmetrically arranged front facade is located the MAIN ENTRANCE: a portico with natural stone plinth, window strip and abutting lean-to roof leads to a bronze double glass door in the left side of the high-rising gabled risalit. The RIGHT WING has on the front side in both the first and second storey a window strip of each nine composite windows per classroom. The arrangement of these classroom windows consists of casement windows at the bottom, fixed middle sections and tilt windows above. The classrooms at the end of the right wing each have a window strip of five composite windows in the right side facade. The rear facade of the right wing (corridor side) has in the first storey a double iron door between two rectangular windows, and above it in the second storey three like windows. The REAR WING has classrooms on either side of a corridor. The side facades have in both storeys four large four-pane windows, of which the arrangement consists of casement windows at the bottom, fixed middle sections and tilt windows above. The new construction against the rear facade is not eligible for protection. Above this extension protrudes a gabled risalit (in line with the corridor) with a six-pane round attic light. This risalit probably originally possessed a multi-pane window running through two storeys as in the risalit on the front side.
In the school a large number of original INTERIOR ELEMENTS have been preserved, such as the layout with central hall and flanking staircase from which corridors run through the rear and right wings with classrooms; grey and white flecked tile floors; walls tiled to approximately 1.5 metres height in light yellow tiles with very thin joint lines; coat racks of chromium-plated tubes with coat hooks; staircase with natural stone landing stairs with iron railing (elegantly curved uprights) on which chromium-plated tube (handrail); staff room with original oak furniture; double iron doors with tube handles in corridors and hall.
