Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
On the western side of the Antwerpsestraat stands the TOWER of the R.K. Dionysiuskerk. The building is a design by architect P. Soffers and dates from 1865. The tower now stands free, since the associated church building was blown up by the occupier in 1944. A short distance away, a new church was built west of the tower around 1950. The tower was restored around 1950 to its original condition. New windows were fitted on the western side. Only the tower, which is now a memorial monument in remembrance of those who fell in the Second World War, falls under protection.
Description.
The building has a square ground plan, comprises three storeys and is crowned by an octagonal spire with crockets, surrounded by flanking spirelets and furnished with slates in Maasdekking.
The tower is built in handmade brick and is articulated by limestone cornice strips. The buttresses, which are mortared and provided with offsets, change at the height of the second storey into corner buttresses, which end slightly below the bell storey in natural stone cappings. On the east side in a shallow spandrel, closed with trefoils in brick, a portal with profiled natural stone moulding. Above the double door in the pointed arch field an oculus. In the second storey a pointed arch window with double lancet and oculus under pointed arch. The bell storey has two sound holes and a clock face, set in a basket arch niche. On the west side at the height of the first storey a pointed arch window with tracery, consisting of a double lancet with oculus, below which a blocked passage. Higher in the masonry the corbels of the roof of the former church nave. On the north and south sides in the first storey a low and broad two-part pointed arch window with fork tracery.
Assessment.
The church tower is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical significance as a particular expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the church tower in the nineteenth century.
The building has architectural-historical significance through its style and detailing and is also of importance as an example of the oeuvre of architect Soffers, who was active in the Breda diocese. It has ensemble values because of its particular situation, connected with the development of the road village Putte. It is a rare example of the work of the architect.
