Inleiding.
Op de hoek van de Stationsstraat en de Van Leeuwenstraat gelegen voormalig CAFé met WOONHUIS (café 'de Sportwereld', thans restaurant/woonhuis), in de rooilijn van de straat. Vrijstaand gebouw met links opzij een steeg met houten poort van het buurpand.
Het pand werd in 1923 in opdracht van J. van Son door de Boxtelse architect J. de Vries gebouwd in een stijl die invloeden vertoont van het Traditionalisme. In 1942 is het rechter dakschild enigermate gewijzigd, in 1977 de achtergevel. De reeds bestaande uitbouwen zijn toen vervangen door een aanbouw over de volle breedte, die buiten de bescherming valt. Ook de borstwering van de veranda aan de straatzijde is niet oorspronkelijk.
Omschrijving.
Het bakstenen pand beslaat een L-vormige plattegrond en bestaat uit twee haaks op elkaar staande bouwvolumes. Hiervan telt het linker volume twee bouwlagen met zolderverdieping onder een met rode tuile du nord-pannen gedekt, afgewolfd zadeldak met de nokrichting loodrecht op de Stationsstraat. Klein dakoverstek met windveren aan de kopgevels, bakgoten op uitkragend metselwerk, pironnen op de nokeinden en een schoorsteen met speklaag op het linker dakschild. Het rechter volume telt één bouwlaag met zolderverdieping onder een, met dito pannen gedekt, afgeplat schilddak voorzien van een noklijst en een omgaande overstekende bakgoot op gesneden klossen. In het voorschild drie, en in het zijschild één dakkapel onder lessenaarsdak, alle met stolpramen. Het metselwerk is uitgevoerd in kruisverband. Het wordt verlevendigd door de toepassing van gele verblendsteen in spekbanden ter hoogte van de onder-, boven- en wisseldorpels en in de halfronde ontlastingsbogen. Voorts een rollaag ter afsluiting van het trasraam en als vensterlatei. De overige vensters hebben anderhalfsteens strekken met kunststenen onderdorpels. Alle ramen, deuren en bovenlichten met oorspronkelijke roedenverdeling. De symmetrische voorgevel van het linker volume heeft beneden twee T-vensters onder anderhalfsteens strekken, op de verdieping een getrapt driedelig venster onder een halfronde ontlastingsboog. Hierboven een paar gepleisterde velden (met opschrift: 'ANNO' en '1923') en in de top een halfrond zoldervenster. Overlangs de gevel van het terugliggende eenlaags volume loopt een open houten veranda onder een lessenaarsdak, aan de straat rustend op gesneden stijl-en-regelwerk met in de korte zijde (aan de straathoek) een beglaasd windscherm met panelen. In de veranda een terrazzovloer. In de gevel zelf drie dubbele beglaasde paneeldeuren met (thans dichtgeschilderde) bovenlichten. In de beide zijgevels T-vensters zoals voornoemd, in de rechtergevel nog een beglaasde paneeldeur met bovenlicht. Overlangs de achtergevel een moderne (in vorm en stijl aangepaste) aanbouw. Van het interieur zijn vermeldenswaard: paneeldeuren met bovenlichten met kleine roedenverdeling voorzien van kathedraalglas, geprofileerde deurlijsten, kelder met troggewelf, decoratieve trap naar de verdieping in het achterdeel van het eenlaagse bouwvolume met gesneden hoofdbaluster; verder in dit trappenhuis een terrazzovloer met betegelde witte lambrisering met zwarte band.
Waardering.
Het object is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van de regionale transit-functie van het op een knooppunt van wegen ontstane Boxtel. Het is daarnaast van belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van café-woonhuizen. Het heeft architectuurhistorisch belang vanwege de deels bijzondere ornamentiek en de samenhang tussen het gave exterieur en bewaard gebleven elementen uit het interieur. Het heeft ensemblewaarden wegens de verbondenheid met de opkomst en ontwikkeling van de stationswijk en -mede door de markante hoekligging- als beeldbepalend onderdeel van de historische bebouwing aan de Stationsstraat.
Als café is het object van belang wegens een architectuurhistorische en typologische zeldzaamheid.

Former café with dwelling house (café 'de Sportwereld', now restaurant/dwelling house) located at the corner of Stationsstraat and Van Leeuwenstraat, in line with the street. Free-standing building with a narrow passage with wooden gate of the neighbouring property on the left side.
The building was constructed in 1923 on the orders of J. van Son by Boxtel architect J. de Vries in a style showing influences of Traditionalism. In 1942 the right roof panel was somewhat modified, in 1977 the rear facade. The pre-existing outbuildings were then replaced by an extension across the full width, which falls outside the protected area. The balustrade of the veranda on the street side is also not original.
Description.
The brick building occupies an L-shaped plan and consists of two building volumes at right angles to each other. Of these, the left volume has two storeys with attic space under a gabled roof covered with red tuile du nord tiles, with the ridge perpendicular to Stationsstraat. Small roof overhang with wind braces at the end gables, box gutters on corbelled masonry, roof finials at the ridge ends and a chimney with brick detailing on the left roof panel. The right volume has one storey with attic space under a hipped roof covered with the same tiles, equipped with a ridge line and a continuous projecting box gutter on cut corbels. Three roof dormers in the front panel and one in the side panel, all under catslide roofs with fixed lights. The masonry is executed in English bond. It is enlivened by the application of yellow facing brick in decorative banding at the level of the lower, upper and intermediate string courses and in the semicircular relieving arches. Furthermore, a roll moulding at the closure of the transom window and as a window lintel. The remaining windows have one-and-a-half-brick stretches with stone sills. All windows, doors and fanlights with original glazing bars. The symmetrical front facade of the left volume has below two T-windows under one-and-a-half-brick stretches, on the first floor a stepped three-part window under a semicircular relieving arch. Above this a pair of plastered fields (with inscription: 'ANNO' and '1923') and at the top a semicircular attic window. Along the facade of the recessed single-storey volume runs an open wooden veranda under a catslide roof, resting on the street on cut posts and rails with on the short side (at the street corner) a glazed windscreen with panels. In the veranda a terrazzo floor. In the facade itself three double-glazed panel doors with (now painted over) fanlights. In both side facades T-windows as mentioned above, in the right facade also a glazed panel door with fanlight. Along the rear facade a modern extension (adapted in form and style). From the interior worthy of mention are: panel doors with fanlights fitted with small glazing bars containing cathedral glass, moulded door frames, cellar with barrel vault, decorative staircase to the first floor at the rear of the single-storey building volume with carved main baluster; further in this stairwell a terrazzo floor with tiled white wall panelling with black band.
Valuation.
The object is of general interest. It has cultural-historical values as a distinctive expression of the regional transit function of Boxtel which arose at a junction of roads. It is furthermore of importance for the typological development of café-dwelling houses. It has architectural-historical importance because of the partly distinctive ornamentation and the coherence between the well-preserved exterior and surviving elements from the interior. It has ensemble values because of its connection with the rise and development of the station district and – also because of its striking corner location – as a distinctive element of the historical buildings on Stationsstraat.
As a café, the object is of importance because of an architectural-historical and typological rarity.
