Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
North of the station building, between the railway depot and the Spoorstraat, a former SERVICE DWELLING is located. The ridge direction of the detached house runs parallel to the Spoorstraat. It was built in 1899 on behalf of the Society for the Operation of State Railways as a service dwelling for the sous-chef. It displays elements of the Chalet style.
Originally the residential building had six-light sash windows and shutters. Modern concrete corrugated tiles have replaced the original Dutch tiles. The wind vanes originally had an openwork moulding. Behind the house stands a small shed which falls outside the protection.
Description.
The partially cellared timber building has a rectangular floor plan and comprises one storey and an attic floor under a gabled roof with large overhang. In the western gable two chimneys, in the eastern gable two roof windows; at the roof edge roof gutters, further simplified wind vanes. Roof truss structure with Philibert trusses in which the wooden parts are connected by mortise and tenon joints. The facades consist of horizontal rabbeted timber sections between vertical cover battens at the corners. Along the base of the facades runs a brick plinth, laid in English bond. The house is built on a slight elevation and clinker paving is laid around it. All facade openings (windows and doors) are provided with moulded trim. The front facade is symmetrical and comprises five bays. In the middle bay a brick step leads to a timber fixed access door with two-light fanlight. On either side of this two three-light sash windows. The rear facade, consisting of three bays, is likewise symmetrical. Centrally a rear door with two-light fanlight with on either side a three-light sash window as aforesaid and a mullioned window with two-light fanlight.
In the gable ends at the apex a three-light window. Below in the north gable two three-light sash windows and in the south gable a similar window next to a glazed, opening double door with two-light fanlight. The rooms are arranged on either side of the central corridor. The house has been modernised internally. Stair balustrade with iron balusters; the starting baluster is (according to the owner's account) from a service dwelling of the station master which has since been demolished.
Evaluation.
The object is of general interest because it possesses cultural-historical value. As a service dwelling for a sous-chef the building is a particular expression of a typological development. The object has above all architectural-historical values. It is of importance for architectural history on account of the particular use of materials and on the basis of the construction applied it is also of importance for the history of building technique. Furthermore the object possesses ensemble value. It forms, together with the adjoining goods shed, the railway network and the station an integral part of the development of the railway zone in Boxtel. The residential building also possesses rarity value. Outward appearance, use of materials, construction method and typology give the object an architectural-historical, building-technical and typological rarity.
