Introduction.

Located on the north side of the complex, a detached deep MANSION, surrounded on both sides and rear by an ornamental garden with various trees (including chestnut and maple) and shrubs; raised, hardstone front step, bordered with bollards between which chains.

Description.

The partially cellared mansion occupies a rectangular floor plan and comprises two storeys with an attic storey under a hipped roof covered with blue slate tiles with broken eaves; in the front slope a wooden roof dormer with carved mullions and moulded pediment. Symmetrical, five bays wide cornice-topped facade with fluted plastered, white painted wall. Centrally the entrance with glazed panelled door with pseudo-nail and cast-iron window bars, moulded calf and one-pane fanlight. On either side two barrel windows with one-pane fanlight and a continuous hardstone drip moulding. On the storey in each bay a smaller barrel window with hardstone drip edge. All frames have a slightly arched top lintel and are set in a moulded stucco surround with crowning frieze block. In the slightly projecting plinth, to the right of the front door a cast-iron boot scraper. The facade is terminated with a cornice, consisting of a roof moulding with profile and an overhanging, moulded gutter resting on scroll-shaped consoles. Rear and side facades with applied moulded gutters. Left facade also plastered but unpainted with in both storeys one window as on the front side, both with shutters. The plastered right facade, with bossage, is blind except for a cellar window. The plastered, bossaged rear facade has across the entire width a canopy on slender, cast-iron columns. Centrally the rear door with two-pane fanlight, to the right of it two six-pane sash windows with shutters. On the storey five barrel windows. Floor plan with central entrance door behind which central corridor to rear door with on the right side main living rooms and on the left a front room, staircase with geometric stair and kitchen. Via the kitchen the coach house is accessible. Of the interior noteworthy are: stucco ceilings, black marble fireplaces, panelled doors, black-and-white marble floor in the corridor, hall with geometric stair furnished with decorative starting baluster with wood carving and sculpture, white marble small fountain with palmette, coloured glass in stairwell light, kitchen mantelpiece, spice cupboards, tiled wall work and cellar with barrel vault and red floor tiles.

Valuation.

The object is of general importance. It has architectural-historical value because of the aesthetic qualities of the design and the detailing, the particular use of materials as well as the coherence between the well-preserved main form and rich interior elements from the period of construction. It has ensemble value as an essential part of a harmonious whole, further consisting of the coach house with dog kennels and ornamental railings, and as a characteristic part of the historic building stock on Clarissenstraat. It is of importance because of the quality of the constituent components, consisting of mansion with front step furnished with bollards with chain and ornamental garden.
