Inleiding
Het GRAFMONUMENT van de adellijke familie Van Blocklant is gesitueerd op het R.K. kerkhof van Megen, dateert uit 1861, bestaat uit een hardstenen kolom en wordt omgeven door een smeedijzeren hekwerk. Omstreeks 1995 is het graf gerestaureerd, waarbij de hardstenen bol is hersteld en het bekronende kruis en de uit IJsselsteentjes bestaande bakstenen voet zijn verdwenen.
Omschrijving
Het monument bestaat uit een vierkante hardstenen kolom, voorzien van een bekroning met bol. Op alle zijden van de pijler zijn inscripties aangebracht. Op de noordelijke zijde staat de tekst: "Opgerigt in den jare / 1861 / door de familie Poort". De zuidelijke en oostelijke zijde zijn in hoogreliëf voorzien van het wapenschild van de familie en bevatten respectievelijk de teksten: "Den weledelen hooggeboren heer / Ludovicus Carolus Baron / Van Blocklant / overleden te Megen den 19 maart 1815 / in den ouderdom van 77 jaren en 7 m. / en deszelfs huisvrouw / Margareta de Geus / overleden te Megen den 21 julie 1839 / in den ouderdom van 79 jaren en / bijna 9 maanden" en "Den weledelen hooggeboren / en weleerwaarden heer / Baron van Blocklant / overleden den 8 juny 1859 te / Ewijk op den huize Doddendaal / en begraven te Megen in den / ouderdom van bijna 70 jaren". Aan de westelijke zijde zijn in hoogreliëf de wapens van de families Van Blocklant en De Pelichu aangebracht, waaronder de tekst "Den weledelen hooggeboren heer / Joannes Petrus Eligius Baron / Van Blocklant de Pelichu / overleden te 's Bosch de ... mei 1812 / en begraven te Megen in den / ouderdom van bijna 81 jaren / en deszelfs huisvrouw / Johanna Theresia Jacoba Lucia Baronnes De Pelichu / overleden te Megen den 21 novem / 1835 in den ouderdom van 45 jaren en 8 maanden". The MEMORIAL OF the noble family Van Blocklant is situated on the R.C. cemetery of Megen, dates from 1861, consists of a sandstone column and is surrounded by wrought iron fencing. Around 1995 the grave was restored, at which time the sandstone ball was repaired and the crowning cross and the brick base consisting of Ijssel bricks disappeared.
Description
The monument consists of a square sandstone column, furnished with a crown and ball. Inscriptions are placed on all sides of the pillar. On the north side is the text: "Erected in the year / 1861 / by the family Poort". The south and east sides are furnished in high relief with the coat of arms of the family and contain respectively the texts: "To the honourable noble gentleman / Ludovicus Carolus Baron / Van Blocklant / died in Megen on 19 March 1815 / at the age of 77 years and 7 months / and his wife / Margareta de Geus / died in Megen on 21 July 1839 / at the age of 79 years and / almost 9 months" and "To the honourable noble / and reverend gentleman / Baron van Blocklant / died on 8 June 1859 in / Ewijk at the house Doddendaal / and buried in Megen at the / age of almost 70 years". On the west side are displayed in high relief the coats of arms of the families Van Blocklant and De Pelichu, below which is the text "To the honourable noble gentleman / Joannes Petrus Eligius Baron / Van Blocklant de Pelichu / died in The Hague on the ... May 1812 / and buried in Megen at the / age of almost 81 years / and his wife / Johanna Theresia Jacoba Lucia Baroness De Pelichu / died in Megen on 21 November / 1835 at the age of 45 years and 8 months". Around the column is a wrought iron fence, hung on wrought iron fence posts set on sandstone bases.
Valuation
The grave is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a specimen of Catholic grave culture, in particular as an example of the manner in which the Catholic elite employed historicising style elements as a representation motif. It has artistic-historical value as an example of workshop production and by reason of its design. It has been preserved in good condition.
