The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

LOCK GATE, built in Functionalist style between 1932 and 1934 after technical design by ir. P.Ph. Jansen, under the architecture of ir. D. Reich. In order to be able to use the lock, a special approach canal was dug. Around 1975 the steel window frames in the lift towers were replaced by aluminium. The granular facing was also applied around 1975.

Description

The lock consists of four lift towers on a rectangular plan, between which the steel lift gates, furnished with rivets and reinforced with lattice work.

These are operated with the aid of cables. Between the lift towers the lock chamber, which between the stop lines is 110 metres long and 14 metres wide. The lock runs parallel to the dike. The towers are of concrete, which is finished with a rough granular layer. The walls of the lock chamber are of concrete, the floor of the lock also. At the foot of the lift towers there is a rounded projection with a concrete canopy. Around this the staircase turns with metal balustrade. The staircase provides access to a further cantilevered projection, formerly for the operation of the lock. This has a flat roof, a panel door and windows around. On the side of the rounded projection and on the other side a widening that continues to just above the flat roof. The towers have in the other gables a standing window in the stairwell with nine-pane division. The upper section projects slightly and rests on a widened base. It has standing band windows under narrow concrete canopy. The flat roof is likewise accentuated by a slightly cantilevered concrete edge.

Valuation

The lock gate is of general importance. The structure has cultural-historical value as representative of the socio-economic and hydraulic engineering development of the Meuse area in the interwar period, in particular as an important component of the improvement of shipping and the water management of the area. It has significance for the typological development of these works. It has architectural-historical value as an example of the combination of functionalist forms and the most modern water engineering techniques and materials. It has ensemble value because of the coherence with the wider surroundings. As an example of an important component of the Meuse canalisation with impressive design and scale it is intact and rare.
