Lithoijensedijk 4A

Inleiding

Lithoijensedijk 4A

Introduction

WEIR, built in Functionalist style between 1934 and 1936, designed technically by ir. P. Ph. Jansen, under the supervision of ir. D. Reich. The fish ladder was modified in 1954. Around 1975 the steel windows in the lift towers were replaced with aluminium. The aggregate cladding was also applied around 1975.

Description

The weir consists of four lift towers placed side by side on a rectangular plan, with three steel wheel sluices between them, each 38 metres in length, reinforced with lattice work. The sluices are operated by chains. At the southern embankment, the existing fish ladder was modified in 1954. The purpose was to enable fish to overcome the two-metre height difference.

The weir with lift towers stands at right angles to the lock and connects both banks of the Maas.

The lift towers are executed in concrete with a white-coloured granular finish layer. The towers are provided at the base with rounded stream breakers with a metal balustrade. The stream breakers are constructed much lower downstream. The towers are interconnected by a footbridge with closed steel balustrade, accessible on the side of the hydroelectric power station via a spiral staircase and an extension of the weir bridge, both from 1990, on the south side via a fixed ladder. The footbridge on the downstream side rests on a concrete widening on the stream breaker. The towers are provided with windows at the top. Downstream these are band windows at the corners of the embankments. The middle towers have a three-light upright window. All towers have a cantilevered section with band window on the front. The canopy thereof and the cantilevered roof edge are of concrete.

Valuation

The weir is of general importance. The structure has cultural-historical value as a representative of the socio-economic and water management development of the Maas region in the interwar period, in particular as an important component of the improvement of navigation and the water management of the area. It has significance for the typological development of these structures. It has architectural-historical value as an example of the combination of functionalist forms and the most modern water management techniques and materials. It has ensemble values due to the coherence with the wider surroundings. As an example of an important component of the Maas canalization with striking design and scale, it is intact and rare.
