Omschrijving
Inleiding
Loret in 1870.

Description
Introduction
The H. LAMBERTUSKERK was built between 1899 and 1900 in Neo-Gothic style after a design by architect C. Franssen. The church stands next to the location of the previous place of worship.
Description
The three-aisled cruciform church comprises five bays behind the west tower, a transept with a roof turret of one bay and a five-sided choir closure of one bay. The gables are constructed of machine-made brick. Offsets, lintels and decorative elements are of ashlar. The gabled and sloping roofs are covered with slate in ridge and Meuse tile covering. At the crossing of transept and nave an octagonal roof turret with pierced trefoil arches and a needle spire with gilded ball and worked cross. The west gable has buttresses with chamfered offsets both at the tower and at the polygonal chapel on the right. At the tower these terminate on the front in natural stone pinnacles. The tower consists of four storeys. In the first storey there is a pointed arch portal with a top gable and cross-flower. Within it a double door with worked iron hinges and fastening with a fanlight containing brick tracery and stained glass. Furthermore a framing by archivolts with profiled base and capital. Behind the portal blind pointed arch niches. In the second storey a broad pointed arch window with offset and brick tracery with blind niches on either side. This section is closed off by a broad brick decorative moulding. The third storey consists of a pointed arch gallery and blind niches containing narrow windows. The last storey contains three coupled pointed arches with sound holes, a round clock face and pointed gables on the four sides of the octagonal needle spire with gilded ball and cross. The side and rear gables have brick buttresses with offsets.
Between these the pointed arch windows with offsets and brick tracery and stained glass. Under the guttering relief decorative brickwork.
In the south gable a polygonal chapel, the Piëta Chapel, and high-set pointed arch windows without tracery. The roof of the chapel is separated from the sloping roof of the side aisle by a wall with buttress on which stands a pinnacle. In the roof plane of both the sloping roofs and the gabled roof of the central nave there are small roof dormers under gabled roof and spire, alternating with each buttress. The transept has in the top gable a climbing trefoil window and cross-flower. The east gable has beside the central high choir two low polygonal side chapels, the Joseph and Mary Chapel.
The north gable has at the tower a small attached staircase turret with polygonal spire roof, which opens onto the tower gallery. The interior space is divided by columns of black natural stone.
The walls are plastered white, except for the structural brick components. These are the mortared cross-rib vaults, the wall ribs, the window framings, the corner pilasters and the corbels. The walls of the central nave and transept have above the wall ribs a coupled blind niche and above that the windows of the clerestory.
The stained glass windows were supplied by F. Nicolas and Sons. The first were installed in 1901 in the choir, the last in 1919 in the Piëta Chapel. The limestone high altar and the altars in the side chapels are executed in a very rich Neo-Gothic style. All were executed by H. van der Geld. The high altar dates from 1904. The tabernacle door is from the hand of C. Esser. The Mary altar of 1900 is the oldest, the Joseph altar followed finally in 1912. In the priest's choir hangs a very large wall hanging from the beginning of the twentieth century, depicting the Sacrifice of Abraham.
H. van der Geld supplied many of the saints' statues present in the church. In 1911 he also created the fourteen stations of the cross in polychrome plaster. By the choir hangs a richly worked Neo-Gothic rood cross of approximately 5 metres high. The polychrome wood was supplied by De Beule at Gent, the corpus came in 1912 from Den Bosch from the firm Kuypers. The baptismal font of 1901 is of ashlar and has a Neo-Gothic copper cover. It is located at the side entrance in the north gable and is from the firm Peeters from Roermond. The two oak confessionals come from the previous church. They were made in 1861-1862 by Doensen from Maaseijk. Organ with two manuals and attached pedal, built by F.B. Loret in 1870.
The church is partly surrounded by low iron ornamental fencing on a brick base.
Valuation
The church is of importance as an example of spiritual development and as an example of Neo-Gothic architecture. The church is of significance for the appearance of Lith, on account of the integrity of interior and exterior and given the high quality of the constituent components.
