Inleiding
De BANK/DIRECTEURSWONING, gebouwd in 1912 naar een ontwerp van de Kollumer architect H. A. Zondag in een bouwtrant waarbij invloeden van de Chalet-stijl herkenbaar zijn, ligt iets buiten de dorpskern van Arum. Van het U-vormige pand met twee topgevels aan de voorzijde (zuid) bevat het rechter gedeelte het bankfiliaal en het linker gedeelte de woning. Het pand is een mooi voorbeeld van de ontwikkeling van de plattelandsbank: van kantoortje aan huis, naar bankgebouw plus woning in één, tot apart bankgebouw. Het bankgedeelte is volledig gemoderniseerd naar de huidige (bank)maatstaven. Tevens is er aan de oostzijde een nieuwe entree aangebouwd onder plat dak. Deze aanbouw loopt door aan de achterzijde. De woning is volledig gemoderniseerd en niet meer verbonden met het bankfiliaal.
Omschrijving
Het pand is wit bepleisterd met vanaf de verdiepingsvloer houten schijnvakwerk. De achtergevel en zijgevels zijn tot verdiepingshoogte opgetrokken in donkerrode baksteen met een rode speklaag ter hoogte van het kalf en rode rollagen boven de gevelsparingen. Hierboven zit het vakwerk met pleisterwerk.
Het samengestelde dak is gedekt met een rode Romaanse pan met op de nokpunten pirons; bakgoot op klossen; gegolfde geprofileerde windveer met een houten opstand in de nok; het bovenste deel onder de nokken is met verticale planken dichtgezet. Aan de achterzijde bevindt zich een aanbouw met dakterras.
Voorgevel: in het linker topgeveldeel op de verdieping een venster met zestien-ruits bovenlicht en twee flankerende vensters; op de begane grond twee vensters met zestien-ruits bovenlicht.
Het centrale gedeelte heeft links de voordeur in een portiek met granieten stoep, in de portiek een gevelsteen met bouwjaar, rechts twee smalle vensters met bovenlicht, hierboven een tegeltableau met het opschrift 'SPAARBANK'; in het dakvlak een dakkapel onder lessenaarsdak en twee twaalf-ruits vensters.
In het rechter topgeveldeel op de verdieping twee vensters met twaalf-ruits bovenlicht; op de begane grond vier smalle vensters met bovenlicht.
Oostgevel: een topgevel met op de verdieping twee vensters met bovenlicht; op de begane grond zes smalle vensters, met daartussen schoonmetselwerk, die het resultaat zijn van een verbouwing (vroeger was hier de entree), en de nieuwe entree van de laatste moderniserings-ronde.
Westgevel: links een topgevel met op de verdieping een venster met zestien-ruits bovenlicht en rechts op de begane grond twee vensters met zestien-ruits bovenlicht.
Achtergevel: de aanbouw met een deur met twee flankerende vensters, twee vensters; in het dakvlak een dakkapel met drie glas-in-loodvensters ter plaatse van het trapportaal van de woning en een toegang tot het dakterras; het keukenvenster aan de westzijde van de aanbouw is van recente datum.
In het INTERIEUR is weinig tot niets meer oorspronkelijk. In de woning is de oude structuur gedeeltelijk intact, in het bankgedeelte is deze verloren gegaan. In de hoge smalle vensters van de begane grond is glas-in lood aangebracht met een figuratie in Vernieuwingsstijl.
Waardering
De bank met directeurswoning te Arum is van algemeen cultuurhistorisch en architectuurhistorisch belang:
- als uitdrukking van een sociaal/economische ontwikkeling;
- als uitdrukking van de typologische ontwikkeling van de plattelandsbank;

Introduction
The BANK/DIRECTOR'S DWELLING, built in 1912 according to a design by Kollum architect H. A. Zondag in a building style in which influences of the Chalet style are recognisable, lies slightly outside the village centre of Arum. Of the U-shaped building with two gabled roofs at the front (south) the right section contains the bank branch and the left section the dwelling. The building is a fine example of the development of the rural bank: from a small office at home, to bank building plus dwelling in one, to separate bank building. The bank section has been completely modernised to current (bank) standards. In addition, a new entrance has been built on the east side under a flat roof. This extension continues on the rear side. The dwelling is completely modernised and no longer connected with the bank branch.
Description
The building is white plastered with timber-framed effect work from the storey floor upwards. The rear facade and side facades are built up to storey height in dark red brick with a red bond course at calf height and red band courses above the window openings. Above this is the timber-framed work with plasterwork.
The composite roof is covered with red Roman tiles with pyrites on the ridge points; gutter on brackets; corrugated profiled weather board with a wooden upstand in the ridge; the upper part under the ridges is closed with vertical planks. On the rear side there is an extension with roof terrace.
Front facade: in the left gabled section on the upper storey a window with sixteen-light fanlight and two flanking windows; on the ground floor two windows with sixteen-light fanlight.
The central section has on the left the front door in a porch with granite step, in the porch a facade stone with construction year, on the right two narrow windows with fanlight, above this a tile tableau with the inscription 'SPAARBANK'; in the roof plane a roof dormer under a catslide roof and two twelve-light windows.
In the right gabled section on the upper storey two windows with twelve-light fanlight; on the ground floor four narrow windows with fanlight.
East facade: a gabled roof with on the upper storey two windows with fanlight; on the ground floor six narrow windows, with exposed brickwork between them, which are the result of an alteration (the entrance was formerly here), and the new entrance from the last modernisation round.
West facade: on the left a gabled roof with on the upper storey a window with sixteen-light fanlight and on the right on the ground floor two windows with sixteen-light fanlight.
Rear facade: the extension with a door with two flanking windows, two windows; in the roof plane a roof dormer with three leaded-light windows at the location of the stairwell of the dwelling and an access to the roof terrace; the kitchen window on the west side of the extension is of recent date.
In the INTERIOR little to nothing is original. In the dwelling the old structure is partly intact, in the bank section it has been lost. In the tall narrow windows of the ground floor leaded-light work has been inserted with a design in Renewal style.
Valuation
The bank with director's dwelling in Arum is of general cultural historical and architectural historical importance:
