INLEIDING

- vanwege de op de pui na ongeschonden gevel in neo-renaissancevormen;

- vanwege de ligging in de gevelwand van de Kleine Kerkstraat en pal tegenover de Bagijnestraat;

- vanwege de bewaard gebleven interieurdelen o.a. de salon op de eerste verdieping;

INTRODUCTION

WORKSHOP WITH UPPER DWELLING, built in 1891 for the carpenter and blind manufacturer Albert Ooiman in Neo-Dutch Renaissance style, on a plot which is known to have been built upon in 1600. The building is built in on the left side and borders the Regenboogsteeg on the right side. The architect is not yet known. After the organ builder Arjen Timmenga acquired the building in 1912, he had the shop front and ground floor renovated. In 1988 the building was restored, during which the portico was, amongst other things, closed off with a double carved door with iron grilles. The decorative hoods of the blinds were removed, but were nevertheless preserved. It has been orally transmitted that in the construction of the building use was made of components from a demolished building on the Tweebaksmarkt on the site where the Post Office now stands. This may explain the irregular shape of the windows. The complex is in use as an organ workshop and dwelling.

Description

EXTERIOR: The building, on a rectangular ground plan, comprises three storeys and an attic storey and is three bays wide, the middle one slightly wider than the outer ones. Originally on the ground floor there were three sets of double doors. Now only the left doors remain. To the right of these is a large rectangular display window. The shop front has a plastered plinth, above which brick, alternated with artificial stone dressings. Between the first and second storey is a plastered frieze. The second storey has three T-windows, which are closed by basket-arch relieving arches with negblocks and diamond-shaped key stones. The arch fields are filled with imitation wickerwork, painted on concrete with incised joints. A drip moulding separates the second from the third storey. The windows of the third storey are slightly lower, but the arch fields are slightly higher. The steps of the gable head are covered with stone slabs and carry volutes. The pinnacle bears an obelisk. Apart from a T-window with a cock's-head weathervane the gable top has five wall anchors and two gable stones with in cartouches in scroll-work respectively Anno and 1891. The entirely plastered side facade contains a number of irregularly placed windows of various sizes. The likewise plastered rear facade has an entrance on the right and over all storeys windows of irregular width with segmental arches. In the rear roof covering is a roof dormer with side walls and a pediment.

INTERIOR: The ground floor contains amongst other things in the hallway the staircase with newel post and iron balusters. On the storeys above the interiors remained largely undisturbed. Notable are amongst others panelled doors in moulded surrounds, some of which are fitted with overdoors in the form of acanthus leaves, a draught door with an etched or sand-blasted representation (an Empire vase with bouquet in surround), stucco ceilings but in particular the drawing room with rich panelling in neo-Renaissance style, stucco ceiling with an oval coving and in the centre a floral composition, a chimney piece with black marble mantelpiece and against the breast Composite pilasters. On the second storey some rooms have a timber ceiling with simple stencilled decoration. The roof structure has curved braces, which come together in a pointed arch.

Valuation

WORKSHOP AND DWELLING of general architectural-historical and cultural-historical significance:

- on account of the unimpaired facade in neo-Renaissance forms except for the shop front;

- on account of the location in the facade wall of the Kleine Kerkstraat and directly opposite the Bagijnestraat;

- on account of the preserved interior elements including the drawing room on the first storey;

- as an example of a live-work building from the late nineteenth century.
