Omschrijving

Description
Description
In its current form, the GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT of the historic country estate DORTH can be characterized as a blend of elements of the (early) landscape style and Classicist elements preserved from preceding periods. The layout of garden and park has been preserved substantially intact. The garden and landscape architects responsible for the layout are unknown. Design drawings are also not available.
The elements of the (early) landscape style are most decisive for the current character of the country estate. Characteristic is the alternation of wooded plots and more open meadows and arable land surrounded by tree belts. Directly to the north-east of the main building lies a large meadow, largely surrounded by a moat with tree belts beyond it. Water plays an important role in the layout of the country estate. Scattered throughout are winding watercourses, widened at various points into pond features. In the largest ponds lie wooded islets, as also in the pond on the south-eastern part of the country estate. Near this islet lies a raised "peninsula" on which the so-called White Cupola formerly stood. The moat surrounding the main building is also adapted with its rounded forms to the landscape style. On the north side of the country estate flow the old Dortherbeek and the Zaalbeek and on the south side the Dortherbeek. Only parts of the Dortherbeek are actually incorporated into the layout of the country estate, namely the parts widened into ponds to the west of the main building. Large parts of the wooded plots on the country estate have a boggy character and are cut through by many, often parallel to each other, drainage channels. In various places the terrain has been artificially raised.
The path system is a blend of broad lanes, both short and long, planted with oaks or beeches, and of narrow, curved paths. The lanes are for the most part remnants from periods preceding the landscape layout of around 1800. One of the most striking lanes is the lane that formerly began close to the castle and ran from there through the star wood in a south-easterly direction. Only the south-eastern part has been preserved, the rest is still recognizable as sight axis. The longest lane begins at the coach house and runs from there in a south-easterly direction, but soon bends to the east. This elongated section ends at a raised mound, from where one has a fine view over the adjoining lands.
Before the main building, within the moats on the forecourt, a garden has been laid out. Centrally is situated a large bed, with a brick-built border and two steps, and in the middle a sundial. From the access bridge runs a path that divides in two at the level of the bed. The branches each lead to one of the steps of the terrace in front of the house. On either side of the terrace are retaining walls to accommodate the height difference between the forecourt and the lower-lying terrain directly around the house.
Valuation
GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT of the historic country estate Dorth in (early) landscape style with Classicist elements.
- of architectural-historical value as a well-preserved example of a garden layout with elements of the (early) landscape style, such as varied water features with wooded islets, and Classicist elements preserved from preceding periods such as among others the long lanes planted with oaks and beeches.
- of urban planning value through the image-defining function of the layout for the surroundings. The layout has ensemble value through its coherence with the various buildings within the estate.
- of cultural-historical value as an example of a historically developed garden layout. The garden layout is currently still the oldest component of a country estate with a very old and rich history. The Dorth estate is of eminent value for the development of the surrounding area.
