Omschrijving

Description

North of the main building of the historic country estate DORTH outside the inner canal, next to the main visual axis of the garden layout, is the former STEWARD'S HOUSE. Like the coach house, it was built in 1929 by architect A.J. Jansen in a Traditional building style with influences from Dutch Renaissance. The various details in facades and roofs are identical to those of the coach house. The steward's house was placed in a rather unfortunate location right next to a visual axis of the main building, presumably to have a good view of the construction of the new main building in 1930.

The STEWARD'S HOUSE has a rectangular ground plan and facades laid in crossed bond. The building has one storey and is closed off by a gabled roof with covered Mulden tiles. The roof truss is provided on the front and rear sides with a profiled gutter on corbels. The facades are provided at the base with a continuous strip window, which is closed off by a half-brick roll course. Windows and door frames are closed off by half-brick roll courses with half-brick relieving arches above. At the base the windows are provided with tiled sills. Both stepped gables and the Flemish gable are provided at the top with hard stone coping plates and have hard stone ornamental blocks on the corners. The upper facade surface of the stepped gables and the Flemish gable at the front is executed in timber framing. During various renovations the interior has been altered among other things. The windows of the roof dormers and Flemish gable in the front facade have also been changed. Currently, instead of two casement windows there are one casement window and one hopper window in one frame.

The symmetrically arranged front facade has a projecting central section that tapers into a Flemish gable. On the ground floor there is a door frame on a hard stone sill and neats, provided with a clamped door. The door is provided on both sides with a 6-pane casement window with 4-pane fanlight. Both the door and the flanking windows are covered by a braced wooden canopy with profiled cornice, which is provided at the base with decorative panelling in herringbone pattern. At the top the canopy is fastened to the facade by twisted tie rods. Above the canopy the Flemish gable is provided with a frame with two 6-pane windows, flanked by blinds. The Flemish gable is covered by an attached gabled roof with covered Mulden tiles and is provided on both sides with a gutter on corbels. The slightly recessed left section of the front facade is provided with a wooden cross window with two coupled single-pane casement windows, provided with two 9-pane fanlights. The frame is provided on both sides with blinds. Above the window section there are two wall anchors. The roof section is provided with a flat-roofed roof dormer with two 6-pane windows and a profiled cornice.

The LEFT SIDE FACADE has in the middle on the ground floor an identical cross window as that in the front facade. To the left of the frame there is a door frame on hard stone neats and sill, provided with a clamped door with 3-pane fanlight. To the right of the door frame there is a narrow frame with single-pane casement window and 9-pane fanlight. The frame is provided with a single blind. Above four wall anchors there are two frames next to each other, provided with 12-pane sash windows and flanking blinds. Above the windows the wall surface of the stepped gable is provided with six regularly placed wall anchors.

The RIGHT SIDE FACADE has on the ground floor two identical cross windows and blinds as those in the front facade. The further arrangement of the facade is the same as that of the left side facade, except for a small masonry chimney on the point of the stepped gable.

The altered REAR FACADE has on the ground floor on the right side a recent wooden extension with an attached lean-to roof. To the left of this there is a single casement window. The left side of the facade has two narrow frames, provided with a single casement window with 9-pane fanlight and one single blind. The facade has at the top seven wall anchors. Above the gutter the roof section is provided with three flat-roofed roof dormers, provided with two coupled 6-pane windows and a profiled cornice. Next to the right roof dormer there is a high masonry chimney.

Just as with the coach house, the arrangement of the INTERIOR of the steward's house has been greatly altered. However, a number of valuable interior elements are still retained such as the original hall with folding doors and tiled floor, beam ceilings and in various places the original panelled doors.

Valuation

STEWARD'S HOUSE belonging to the historic country estate Dorth, in Traditional building style, built in 1929.

- of architectural-historical value as a well-preserved example of a service building in traditional building style. The building stands out due to high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design, the well-preserved main form, the detailing and the use of materials, as visible among other things in the richly executed stepped gables and frames.

- of urban-planning value due to the siting of the object in relation to the other buildings and the surroundings. The object thus also has ensemble value with the coach house, the main house, the access bridge and the garden layout.

- of cultural-historical value as part of a country estate with a very old and rich history. The Dorth estate is of eminent value for the development of the surrounding area.
