Inleiding

Introduction

Double DWELLING HOUSE, built in 1931 after a design by the Gebroeders de Boer, contractors from Delfzijl. The double, mirror-image house is constructed in a regional Amsterdam School variant. In 1938 the then owner of the left half (Rijksweg 3) had a storage building built adjacent to his house, and in 1986 had the layout altered. The main entrance was then moved from the front to the side. The right half (M. van Coehoornsingel 25) received a garage at the rear in 1956, which was later extended with a transverse section. Storage building and garage fall outside the protection of national heritage status.

The double dwelling forms part of an expansion plan from 1927, on the basis of which building in Delfzijl for the first time took place outside the old fortification moat. In this residential district villas, shop buildings and simple middle-class houses were planned. The more luxurious building was constructed along the outer edge, with views over the former fortification moat. This double house with small front garden is prominently situated at the corner of the Rijksweg and M. van Coehoornsingel and marks the entrance to the district.

Description

Double DWELLING HOUSE erected on a butterfly-shaped plan in sintered brick on a travertine base of dark clinkers. The central part is two storeys high with a half-hipped roof and both side wings are one storey high with hipped roofs. The composite roof, covered with a muffled, black improved Dutch tile, has ample wooden overhangs with rectangular gutters and a brickwork chimney on the ridge. The front facade (east) is divided into two by a substantial wall pier which protrudes slightly above the ridge. On either side of the pier a large recumbent window with brickwork planter in front; above it a concrete balcony with brickwork parapet, accessible via glazed balcony doors; in the roof plane an obliquely placed roof light with two opening windows of plain leaded glass. The northeast facade has a tall window, a painted wooden door with leaded glass door lights and a brickwork step with granite border, between a narrow corner window and a small leaded glass window; in the roof plane a flat roof light with overhang and leaded glass window with two side lights. The southeast facade has the same layout, only the door is replaced by a window and the leaded glass by plain glass, with the exception of the small leaded glass window to the left of the "door". In the northwest facade a three-part corner window with glazing bars and plain leaded glass next to a terrace door with plain leaded glass door light; in front of it a terrace with brickwork planter; a narrow tall window, a window with side light, both with plain leaded glass. In the roof plane two roof lights with two leaded glass opening windows. A brickwork wall pier, which extends at the height of the roof lights, separates the terrace from the rest of the facade. The southwest facade has the same layout, only the terrace door is replaced by the original front door (without leaded glass) and the leaded glass in the windows is replaced by plain glass. At the corners of the northwest and southwest facades with the west facade a small storage building with door (renewed) and narrow three-pane corner window is built out under a flat roof with overhang. In both the left and right halves of the rear facade (west) glazed terrace doors under a fanlight with projecting concrete lintel and a three-part window (left with plain leaded glass); in the roof plane a double roof light with four opening windows under an ample overhang.

In the INTERIOR of the house Coehoornsingel 25 are of note among others: the doors in the hall with leaded glass door light depicting part of a radiant sun.

The INTERIOR of the house Rijksweg 3 falls outside protection due to complete reconstruction.
