Inleiding

Introduction

The first stone of the Central Building or CHILDREN'S HOME, part of the complex of the Martha Foundation, was laid on 7 June 1910 and on 30 April 1911 the building was inaugurated. In the children's home, which was designed in the Neo-Historicist style, washing and cooking took place while in a pavilion connected to the main building, the shower and bathing facilities were housed (east). In the 1990s an octagonal extension in matching design was added to the shower and bath building; the shower and bath building was then connected to the main building by a renewed intermediate section. The interior of the Central Building has been completely renovated.

Description

The Central Building is constructed in red brick over two storeys on a rectangular floor plan. On the east side, against the gable end, there is a rectangular pavilion (bath and shower building) of one storey, which has four window bays and is slightly narrower than the main volume; an intermediate section connects the two volumes. Against the western gable end is a single-storey extension of two window bays. The three parts are covered by an overhanging half-hipped roof with hipped tuile-du-Nord tiles, wind ridges and gutters on cut brackets. On the eastern ridge end of the main volume stands a roof turret under a copper roof with clocks on four sides and gable boards. Six small roof dormers under lean-to roofs and four under gabled roofs on the main volume. Elongated flat roof dormers on the extensions.

The facades are articulated by windows composed of six-pane windows; beneath the windows are hardstone drip mouldings. On the ground floor and in the gable tops above the windows are lintels of artificial stone and segmented relieving arches with springing and closing stones. The entrance doors are fitted with richly decorated artificial stone frames. At the entrances are hardstone stoops and chamfered stones. Large ornamental wall anchors at the height of the floor.

The symmetrical front facade (north) has nine window bays. Centrally in the facade is the framed entrance: a wooden door under a round arch with an oval fanlight, set in a frame with mock joints, small cornices, pilasters, in relief "AºD" and "1910" and a round arch pediment with a cherub's head within. On the ground floor are cross windows, on the upper floor are sash windows.

In the symmetrical gable end of the western extension is a framed entrance between two large composite windows. The door ends here in a basket arch and has a frame with a right-angled eight-pane fanlight, volutes and a round arch pediment with a shell motif. Above the door is a hardstone fascia stone with the inscription "Love builds". In the truncated gable top is a nine-pane window between two six-pane windows. Behind this gable end is the gable end of the main volume, with two sash windows and two six-pane windows.

The rear facade (south) has fourteen window bays. The windows here are coupled in threes with cloister windows on the ground floor and single windows on the upper floor. In the fourth window bay from left and from right are wooden doors with fanlights. In the seventh window bay from left is a round arch-shaped door under a right-angled fanlight set in a frame with a triangular pediment. The door is flanked by eight-pane side lights. Because of the doors and differing window formats, the window bays vary in width and this facade is the only one without symmetrical layout.

The gable end on the east side is occupied on the ground floor by the intermediate section connecting the bath and shower building to the main volume. In the gable top is a balcony door flanked by two sash windows. On the ridge of the extension stands a large square roof turret with horizontal six-pane windows. In the gable end of the main volume are four six-pane windows.

The bath and shower building is constructed on a rectangular floor plan under a tent roof. The top of the roof is opened on one side and horizontal eight-pane windows are placed between, creating a light well. In the facades are six-pane windows and coupled four-pane windows and glazed doors with glazing bars.
