Inleiding

Introduction

CHURCH of the Dutch Reformed congregation from 1899 in neo-Gothic style. The Grote Kerk is situated outside the dike, on the Cortgene slightly back from the road at a forecourt surrounded by a fence and trees. Directly adjacent lies the parsonage from 1882 in neoclassical style which is of subordinate importance for protection.

The consistory at the rear of the church has recently been renovated with a number of internal walls removed and new panelling installed. The original church lamps are hung in this room. The old safe is also located here. The church has a new wooden floor and a new seating plan. The entrance vestibule is separated from the church by means of a new glazed wall.

Description

The symmetrical church is constructed in red brick from a Greek-cross floor plan. The church has a complex hipped roof with peaked gables and a square bell tower with octagonal superstructure and spire with slate in Maas coverage.

The window openings are pointed (to a slight degree). The windows are in three sizes with the height varying each time. There are also a number of circular windows. The windows have iron tracery, roll mouldings and mortared sills. Several double wooden doors with iron fittings.

The plinths and corniced cordon mouldings are executed in standing dark-red brick. On all corners are pilasters with shoulders. Along the roof edges stepped arch friezes throughout the brickwork. Church has zinc rainwater pipes and wooden roof cornices.

The tower is incorporated centrally in the front façade (south). At the base of the tower is the main entrance with a pointed entrance portico. A sandstone step leads to the double wooden doors beneath a fanlight with cast-iron quatrefoils.

Above the entrance a sandstone facade stone with the text: "in memory of Cornelis Smit, 1784-1858", a memorial stone originating from the demolished Koepelkerk.

In the tower a large window in the front façade and on all sides three narrow sound holes. The square tower section ends with an open battlemented parapet with below it an arch frieze. In the octagonal tower spire arch friezes and copper clock faces. On either side of the tower in the front façade two cast-iron circular windows.

In the symmetrical right-side façade are two entrance sections with sealed pointed-arch arch fields. The doors are each flanked by small pointed-arch windows, four in total. Above the cordon moulding in the central risalit five large tall pointed-arch windows and in the adjacent façade sections two small circular windows.

The central risalit in the symmetrical rear façade has on the ground floor a projecting façade section, above this a pointed-arch window. On the flanks of the central risalit pointed-arch doors beneath a circular window. Beside it a pointed-arch window. In the façade sections beside the central risalit a pointed-arch window.

In the left-side façade the central risalit has three large tall pointed-arch windows and two small pointed-arch windows. On the left a wooden door with pointed arch beneath a circular window with tracery.

INTERIOR. In the entrance vestibule several gravestones and two lancet windows. In the church are four galleries with continuous wooden panel panelling. The galleries rest on cast-iron columns with Corinthian capital. In the gallery in the north façade opposite the main entrance, an ornately worked wooden organ case. On the ground floor an worked oak wooden pulpit with hexagonal canopy and with a hanging hexagonal body which has a scale-like motif on its underside.

The church has a wooden roof truss structure of decorative beading. The flat ceiling and sloping side walls of this wooden construction rest on wooden brackets and are moreover supported by an iron network of tie and hanging rods with a rosette in the centre. In the ceiling a number of square iron ventilation grilles.

In the church is a two-manual organ with pedal, made in 1881 by the organ maker R. Meijer from Veendam. In 1899 relocated to the present church building. The instrument was restored and expanded in 1982 by the firm Reil from Heerde. The expansion is not of value from the point of view of heritage conservation.

Valuation

The church is of general interest because of its cultural-historical value as an example of a late nineteenth-century Dutch Reformed Church.

The church is of general interest because of its architectural-historical value due to its recognizable typology and neo-Gothic architectural style; a building style that differs from typical Protestant church construction.

The church is authentic in main form, detailing and material use. The interior is nearly authentic and is of value because of the organ case, pulpit and wooden roof structure.

The church has ensemble value because of its visually dominant location outside the dike, on the outskirts of Alblasserdam.
